Car ferry (775)

Car ferry

Direction Signs Sign number: 775

When you see the sign

The sign indicates that the road leads to or forms part of a connection with a car ferry. Slow down if necessary, find the correct lane and be prepared for a queue, barrier, traffic light or instructions from ferry staff.

Rules

  • The sign indicates a ferry connection that can transport motor vehicles.
  • The sign does not in itself grant priority, impose a duty to give way or set a specific speed limit.
  • You must stop at a red traffic light, a closed barrier or the indicated stop line and wait until it is safe to board.
  • At the terminal, follow signs, road markings and instructions about which lane or ferry berth to use.

Tips

  • Reduce your speed early because the ferry queue may extend onto the road.
  • Check the destination and ferry berth before joining the queue, especially at terminals serving several routes.
  • Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front while boarding and follow signals from the ferry staff.
  • Check the timetable and any service announcements in advance if the ferry is part of your planned route.

Common misconceptions

  • !Some people think the sign warns of a passenger-only ferry, but it applies to a ferry connection that carries motor vehicles.
  • !Some interpret the sign as an instruction to drive straight on board. You must wait for a green light, an open barrier or a signal that you may proceed.
  • !Some confuse the sign with an information board or direction sign. The Bilferje sign provides information about the transport connection itself, not lane allocation or the full layout of the junction.

Theory test tip

In the theory test, the trap may be to attribute a rule to the sign that it does not have. Sign 775 indicates a car ferry, but does not automatically impose a duty to give way, grant priority or set a new speed limit.

On many Norwegian national and county roads, the same road number continues on the other side of the fjord, even though part of the journey must be made by car ferry.

Frequently asked questions

Does the sign mean that I have to take the ferry?

The sign indicates that the road leads to or continues via a car ferry. You can choose another route if one is available, but if you continue on the signed road, the ferry may be necessary.

Do I have to reduce my speed when I see the sign?

The sign does not set a specific speed limit. Nevertheless, you must adjust your speed so that you can stop for a ferry queue, barrier, traffic light or other traffic at the terminal.

Can I pass the queue to ask whether there is space?

You must follow the signs and marked lanes and must not use the wrong lane or create a hazard. If certain vehicles are to use a separate lane, this must be indicated by signs, road markings or instructions.

Is Bilferje the same as a direction sign?

No. A direction sign indicates a direction or destination, while Bilferje identifies a connection where motor vehicles are transported by ferry.
