Toll road/road user charging (765)

Toll road/road user charging

Direction Signs Sign number: 765

When you see the sign

Skilt 765 indicates that the road or route shown is subject to tolls or another form of user payment. Consider whether you want to take the toll route, and be prepared for automatic registration or other payment arrangements.

Rules

  • The sign indicates that payment is required on the road or route shown, but it is not a prohibitory sign.
  • The symbol may be included on a direction sign, in which case it means that the route shown involves tolls or another form of user payment.
  • The sign does not necessarily mean that the payment point is located exactly where the sign stands.
  • You must follow signs, lane-control signals and any payment instructions at the toll point; Skilt 765 does not in itself change the speed limit or right of way.

Tips

  • Pay close attention to which arrow, road or destination the symbol is associated with, especially when several routes are shown on the same sign.
  • Do not brake sharply or stop at an automatic toll station; continue driving normally unless other signs indicate otherwise.
  • Check the payment arrangement in advance if you are driving without an AutoPASS agreement or using a foreign or rental vehicle.
  • Choose an alternative route before the exit if you want to avoid the toll road.

Common misconceptions

  • !Many people think the sign always marks a physical toll booth where they must stop and pay. Most Norwegian toll stations register the vehicle automatically.
  • !Some interpret the symbol as meaning that all routes on the direction sign require user payment. It applies only to the route or direction associated with the symbol.
  • !The sign is confused with a prohibition on continuing without an AutoPASS transponder. The sign warns of payment, but a transponder is not in itself a general requirement for passing through.

Theory test tip

In the theory test, the symbol may be placed next to only one arrow on a direction sign. The trap is to assume that the payment requirement applies to all the directions shown; always associate the symbol with the relevant arrow or route.

Did you know

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to stop when I see Skilt 765?

No, the sign does not in itself require you to stop. At automatic toll stations, you should normally continue driving and follow the applicable signs and speed limit.

Does the sign mean that the toll station is immediately after the sign?

Not necessarily. It may warn that the route farther ahead involves tolls or another form of user payment.

Can I drive on the road without an AutoPASS transponder?

You can usually pass through an automatic toll station without a transponder, but payment will then be handled according to the applicable arrangement. Do not assume that cash payment is available at the toll point.

Does the sign change the speed limit or right of way?

No, Skilt 765 provides information about user payment. The speed limit, right of way and lane positioning are determined by other signs, road markings and traffic rules.
