Cargo port (776)

Cargo port

Direction Signs Sign number: 776

When you see the sign

Sign 776 shows the road or exit to a cargo port. Follow the arrow or other direction signs if the cargo port is your destination, and adapt your driving to possible heavy traffic and activity in the port area.

Rules

  • The sign identifies or indicates the direction to a cargo port; it does not by itself impose any prohibition, requirement or special speed limit.
  • The arrow, exit symbol or position on the direction sign determines which direction you should follow.
  • The usual rules on right of way, lanes and speed limits still apply unless other signs or road markings specify otherwise.
  • The sign does not automatically grant access to restricted quays, terminals or other areas with limited access.

Tips

  • Be prepared for lorries that turn widely, take a long time to accelerate or need extra space.
  • Move into the correct lane early when the symbol appears on an advance direction sign or directional sign.
  • Look for supplementary signs, gates and local signs regulating access, stopping or parking within the port area.
  • Do not follow the sign if you are going to a passenger ferry or marina; these may have different directional signs.

Common misconceptions

  • !Thinking that the sign warns of an ordinary ferry quay or passenger port. It specifically indicates a port or terminal for freight traffic.
  • !Thinking that the sign gives freight or port traffic priority. Right of way is determined by other signs and the traffic rules.
  • !Assuming that everyone can drive all the way into the port area. Parts of the area may be private, secured or access-controlled.

Theory test tip

In the theory test, the sign may be confused with an advance direction sign or directional sign. Remember that 776 indicates the destination Godshavn, while the sign's layout and arrows show where and how you should drive.

Did you know

The Godshavn sign is used to direct lorry traffic in particular to the appropriate port terminals and can therefore help keep heavy traffic away from town centres, passenger quays and local residential areas.

Frequently asked questions

Does sign 776 mean that I am approaching a ferry quay?

Not necessarily. The sign indicates a cargo port, meaning a port area for handling and transporting freight, rather than primarily a passenger ferry.

Do I have to slow down when I see the sign?

The sign does not set a separate speed limit. You must nevertheless obey the applicable speed limit and adapt your speed to heavy traffic, junctions, gates and other activity.

Does the sign give lorries priority?

No. Lorries and other port traffic must follow the same right-of-way rules as everyone else, unless specific signs or traffic regulations state otherwise.

Can a passenger car follow the sign to the cargo port?

Yes, if the driver has a lawful reason to be there and no other signs restrict access. The sign alone does not, however, authorise entry into restricted or secured terminal areas.
