Temporary detour
The sign warns that the road is temporarily closed, and that through traffic must follow the detour.
When you see the sign
Be prepared for the road ahead to be temporarily closed to through traffic. Follow the signed diversion route and any arrows or subsequent diversion signs until you are back on the normal route.
Rules
- Sign 743.2 indicates that the road is temporarily closed and that through traffic must follow the diversion.
- Follow the direction shown on the sign, as well as subsequent signs guiding traffic along the entire diversion route.
- Other traffic signs along the diversion, including speed limits, give-way signs and prohibition signs, apply as normal.
- The sign does not, in itself, authorise you to pass barriers or enter a closed section of road.
Tips
- Reduce your speed well in advance so that you have time to notice the arrow and choose the correct road.
- Look for additional diversion signs at the following junctions; the route may involve several changes of direction.
- Follow the signs rather than the navigation system if the map tries to direct you back to the closed road.
- Be prepared for a narrower road, sharper bends or more local traffic than on the original route.
Common misconceptions
- Assuming that the sign merely suggests an optional route. Through traffic must follow the signed diversion.
- Confusing the sign with an ordinary direction sign or advance direction sign showing permanent destinations and route choices.
- Following the GPS back towards the closed road instead of following the temporary signs.
Test yourself
Easy
What does this sign warn about?
- AThe road has several lanes with different directions and destinations.
- BThe road is temporarily closed, and through traffic must follow the detour.
- CThe road is open, but through traffic is recommended to use another route.
- DThe road has been given a permanent alternative route to the same destination.
Medium
The GPS directs you back toward the closed road, while the continuing temporary signs point straight ahead. What do you do?
- AI stop in the carriageway and wait until the road opens.
- BI drive straight ahead and follow the continuing temporary signs.
- CI choose a side road without following further signs.
- DI turn toward the closed road and follow the GPS route.
Hard
What is the special function of the arrow on this variant compared with an ordinary direction sign?
- AIt marks the direction to the nearest open parking area.
- BIt marks an optional shortcut past heavy traffic.
- CIt marks the direction in which the temporary detour continues.
- DIt marks the lane leading to a permanent destination.
Theory test tip
In the theory test, the trap may be interpreting the sign as an ordinary advance direction sign. Remember the key words «temporarily closed»: Through traffic must follow the diversion, not continue on the normal route.
Did you know
Temporary diversion signs are often used during roadworks, landslides, floods, events or other short-term closures. They may form part of a continuous signed route that directs traffic around the entire affected section.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to follow the diversion even if my GPS shows a different route?
You must comply with the current signs and cannot follow the GPS onto a closed road. GPS data may be out of date when the closure is temporary.
Does the sign mean that the entire road is closed to all traffic?
The sign indicates that the road is temporarily closed and that through traffic must follow the diversion. Whether local access is possible must be determined based on barriers, supplementary signs and other signs at the location.
How do I know when the diversion is over?
Follow all subsequent diversion signs until the signs direct you back to the normal route. Do not end the diversion simply because the navigation system suggests a shortcut.
What is the difference between sign 743.2 and an ordinary direction sign?
An ordinary direction sign shows directions to destinations or route numbers as part of the normal direction signage. Sign 743.2 is used during a temporary closure and directs through traffic along a diversion route.
