Temporary detour (743.1)

Temporary detour

Direction Signs Sign number: 743.1

The sign warns that the road is temporarily closed, and that through traffic must follow the detour.

When you see the sign

Be prepared for the road ahead to be temporarily closed. If you are travelling through the area, you must follow the signed detour and look for further detour directions.

Rules

  • Through traffic must follow the signed detour because the usual road is temporarily closed.
  • The sign does not, by itself, give permission to pass barriers or other signs prohibiting entry.
  • Speed limits, give-way rules and other regulations apply as normal along the detour route.
  • Traffic travelling to properties or businesses before the actual closure must follow other signs and cannot automatically be considered through traffic.

Tips

  • Reduce your speed in good time so that you have time to see which direction the detour continues in.
  • Look for additional temporary detour signs at every junction along the route.
  • Do not rely blindly on your navigation app, as the temporary closure may have been introduced recently.
  • Allow extra time, as the detour may be longer or use roads with lower capacity.

Common misconceptions

  • !Thinking that the sign merely recommends an alternative route; through traffic must follow the detour.
  • !Confusing the sign with an ordinary direction sign that only indicates the direction to a destination.
  • !Assuming that the detour sign cancels speed limits, give-way rules or other traffic signs along the route.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to follow the detour?

Yes, if you are travelling through the area. The usual road is temporarily closed, and you must follow the signed route.

Can I drive in if my destination is before the closure?

This may be possible if no other signs or physical barriers prohibit it. Always follow the specific regulations at the location, and do not pass a barrier.

Does the navigation app apply if it shows a different road?

No, the signs and traffic regulations at the location take precedence over the app's route choice. Follow the detour signs until you are back on the regular route.

Does the sign change the speed limit or give-way rules?

No. You must follow the signed speed limits, give-way rules and other regulations along the entire detour route.
