Motorway (761)

Motorway

Direction Signs Sign number: 761

When you see the sign

The sign indicates a road leading to a motorway, or that the route shown leads to a motorway. Choose this direction only if your vehicle and route are suitable for motorway travel, and be prepared to follow motorway rules when you actually pass sign 502 «Motorway».

Rules

  • Sign 761 is a direction sign and does not in itself mean that the motorway begins where the sign is located.
  • Motorway rules apply only after you pass sign 502 «Motorway».
  • On a motorway, only motor vehicles that are legally capable of being driven at least 40 km/h on a level road are permitted.
  • The sign does not indicate a speed limit. Unless a separate speed-limit sign is displayed, the maximum permitted speed is normally 80 km/h, including on motorways.

Tips

  • Check early which lane or exit leads towards the motorway.
  • Do not increase your speed to motorway speed just because you see sign 761; adapt your speed to the road and the applicable speed limit.
  • If you are towing a trailer or driving a vehicle with specific restrictions, check that the motorway route is suitable before following the direction signs.
  • Look for sign 502 at the actual entrance, as it marks the point at which the motorway rules begin to apply.

Common misconceptions

  • !Believing that sign 761 marks the beginning of the motorway and immediately introduces the motorway rules.
  • !Assuming that the speed limit is automatically 110 km/h. An unsigned motorway normally has a speed limit of 80 km/h.
  • !Confusing the sign with an ordinary direction sign that only shows a place name; the motorway symbol indicates the type of road that the route leads to.

Frequently asked questions

Does sign 761 mean that I am already driving on a motorway?

No. It shows a road leading to or via a motorway, but the motorway rules begin only when you pass sign 502 «Motorway».

Does the speed limit become 110 km/h when I follow the sign?

No. You must follow the posted speed limit, and an unsigned motorway normally has a speed limit of 80 km/h.

Can I follow the direction signs with a moped or bicycle?

You may not ride a moped or bicycle on the motorway itself. Therefore, when the sign shows a route to a motorway, you must choose another legal route.

How does sign 761 differ from an ordinary direction sign?

An ordinary direction sign normally points towards named places or destinations. Sign 761 uses the motorway symbol to show that the indicated direction leads to a motorway.
