Detour route for large vehicles
When you see the sign
The sign shows a diversion route designed for large vehicles. If you are driving a large vehicle to which the diversion applies, continue following the signs along the route; if you are driving a regular passenger car, follow the normal signs unless other signs direct you onto the diversion route.
Rules
- The sign indicates a special diversion route for large vehicles, not a general requirement for all road users.
- The sign does not in itself prohibit continuing on the usual road; any prohibitions or restrictions are shown by separate signs.
- The driver must still obey signs indicating, among other things, the maximum height, width, length, gross weight and axle load along the diversion route.
- Follow the route by looking for repeated diversion signs, direction signs or arrows at intersections and exits.
Tips
- Reduce your speed before intersections so that you have time to notice which direction the diversion route continues in.
- Do not rely solely on your navigation app; temporary or special signs at the location take precedence over the app's route suggestions.
- If you are driving a long or heavy vehicle, you should choose the signed route rather than an arbitrary shortcut that may have tight bends, low bridges or weight restrictions.
- Look for confirmation signs after an intersection if the route is not obvious.
Common misconceptions
- Thinking that the sign means only large vehicles are allowed to use the road.
- Thinking that all passenger cars must follow this diversion.
- Assuming that the sign guarantees clear passage for any large vehicle, regardless of its height, weight or axle load.
Test yourself
Easy
What does this sign mean?
- AIt indicates lanes to be used by all types of heavy transport.
- BIt indicates a route for the transport of dangerous goods.
- CIt warns that dangerous goods are on the road.
- DIt prohibits all further transport of dangerous goods.
Medium
You are driving a passenger car and encounter this sign. There are no other signs limiting further driving on the ordinary road. What do you do?
- AI must follow the indicated route to the next main road.
- BI must choose the lane closest to the sign at the intersection.
- CI must stop because the road ahead is only for large vehicles.
- DI may continue on the ordinary road if I wish.
Hard
You are driving a lorry that is 4,2 metres high and following the indicated route. Further along the route there is a sign stating maximum height 4,0 metres. What do you do?
- AI continue because the indicated route guarantees sufficient height.
- BI continue because the height restriction only applies to passenger cars.
- CI continue if I drive slowly under the obstruction.
- DI choose another lawful route before the height restriction.
Theory test tip
In the theory test, the trap may be interpreting the sign as a requirement or a prohibition. It is primarily a route indication for large vehicles; look for separate regulatory signs if the question concerns who is allowed to continue driving.
Did you know
Separate diversion routes for large vehicles are used to prevent heavy, tall or long vehicles from being directed onto narrow local roads, under low bridges or through areas with limited load-bearing capacity.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to follow the sign when driving a regular passenger car?
Usually not, because the route is specifically indicated for large vehicles. However, you must still obey other signs that close the road or show a diversion applying to all traffic.
Does the sign mean that the usual road is closed to large vehicles?
Not by itself. Any prohibition against large, heavy, long or tall vehicles must be indicated by separate prohibition or restriction signs.
Can a large vehicle always use the entire signed route?
The driver must still check and obey all signed restrictions along the route. The vehicle's actual dimensions, gross weight and axle load may mean that special permission or a different route is required.
What should I do if my navigation app shows a different road?
Follow the signs at the location, particularly when the diversion is due to roadworks, a road closure or local restrictions. A navigation app may not have up-to-date information or may suggest a road that is unsuitable for large vehicles.
