Route marker sign
Symbols on route marker signs may be shown on other directional signs. Route marker signs indicating road numbers may show the letters N
When you see the sign
Read the road number and check that it matches the route you intend to follow. The sign identifies a national road route, but does not in itself require you to travel in a particular direction; follow the arrows and other direction signs when choosing your way through the junction.
Rules
- Sign 723.12 shows the number of a national road route.
- The symbol may be displayed on other direction signs to show which direction leads to or follows the national road route.
- The road number may be followed by the letters N, S, Ø or V to distinguish between directions or alternative parts of a route.
- The sign does not impose any separate rule concerning the speed limit, right of way or choice of lane.
Tips
- Compare the road number with your navigation system or route plan before reaching the junction.
- Check whether the route symbol appears together with an arrow or above a specific lane.
- Use repeated route signs to confirm that you are still following the correct route.
- Pay attention to any letter after the road number, as the same number may be signed with different directions.
Common misconceptions
- Assuming that the sign alone means you must turn; it is the arrow or the layout of the direction signs that shows the direction.
- Confusing it with an ordinary direction sign showing a destination or place name.
- Assuming that a national road automatically means a motorway or has a specific speed limit.

- BIt may show that the next destination has a name beginning with V.
- CIt may distinguish a western direction or a western part of the route.
- DIt may show that the route always has vikeplikt at the next junction.
Theory test tip
A common trap is to interpret the road number as a mandatory direction of travel. In the theory test, you must distinguish between the route symbol, which identifies the road, and arrows or lane guidance, which tell you where to drive.
Did you know
The route symbol does not have to appear on a separate sign. It can be incorporated into, among other things, advance direction signs and direction signs, allowing drivers to follow the road number through several junctions.
Frequently asked questions
What does sign 723.12 mean?
It shows the number of a national road route. The sign is used to identify the route and help you follow the correct road.
Does the sign determine which way I must drive at a junction?
No, not on its own. You must follow the arrows and the positioning on the other direction signs to find the correct direction or lane.
Does the sign mean that the road is a motorway?
No. A national road route may run on different types of road, and a motorway is indicated by a separate sign.
What does a letter such as N or V after the road number mean?
The letter is used to distinguish between directions or alternative parts of the same route. N, S, Ø and V refer to north, south, east and west.
