Symbols on route marker signs may be shown on other directional signs. Route marker signs indicating road numbers may show the letters N
When you see the sign
Read the route symbol or road number and compare it with the route you intend to follow. Continue in the direction indicated by other direction signs for the same route; the vegruteskiltet alone does not require you to turn.
Rules
- Skilt 723.14 identifies a specific road route using a route symbol, optionally with a letter or number.
- The symbol from the vegruteskiltet may also appear on other direction signs to show which direction the route continues.
- The vegruteskiltet does not by itself indicate lanes, the layout of the junction or distance; this must be determined from other signs and any arrow.
- The sign does not change the speed limit, right of way or any other traffic rules.
Tips
- Look for the same route symbol on orienteringstavler and vegvisere before junctions.
- Check the complete designation, not just the number, as different routes may have similar numbers or symbols.
- Move into the correct lane early when another direction sign shows which direction the route follows.
- If the navigation system and the signs disagree, follow the relevant signs and reassess the route at a safe location.
Common misconceptions
- Thinking that the vegruteskiltet is a direction sign that alone tells you where to turn.
- Confusing it with an orienteringstavle showing the layout of the junction or the order of exits.
- Thinking that the route number determines the speed limit or gives the road right of way.

- CThe symbol pointing towards the nearest main road, regardless of the value it shows.
- DThe symbol above your current lane, regardless of the value it shows.
Theory test tip
In the theory test, the trap may be to choose that the sign shows lane allocation or requires a particular turn. Remember that the vegruteskiltet primarily identifies the route; the arrow, lane position and other direction signs show the direction.
Did you know
The vegrutesymbolet does not have to be displayed on a separate sign. Under the skiltforskriften, the symbol may be repeated on other direction signs, allowing the driver to follow the same route through several junctions.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to turn when I see a vegruteskilt?
Not because of the vegruteskilt alone. You must look at arrows, vegvisere and the position of the sign to determine the direction the route follows.
Is the vegruteskiltet the same as an ordinary direction sign?
No. An ordinary direction sign points towards destinations or roads, while the vegruteskiltet identifies the route itself with a symbol or designation.
Does the sign show which lane I should use?
No, not by itself. Lane selection is shown, among other things, by a kjørefeltorienteringstavle, portalorienteringstavle or kjørefeltvegviser.
Does a particular route number indicate a particular speed limit?
No. The speed limit is determined by separate speed-limit signs or the general speed limits, not by the route number.
