Symbols on route marker signs may be shown on other directional signs. Route marker signs indicating road numbers may show the letters N
When you see the sign
Check that the road number or route symbol matches the route you intend to follow. When the symbol appears on another vegvisningsskilt, follow the arrow and any lane indication associated with the symbol.
Rules
- Skilt 723.21 identifies a specific route, normally by means of a road number or a separate route symbol.
- The symbol from the route sign may be incorporated into other vegvisningsskilt to show which direction or lane leads to the route.
- The letters N, S, Ø or V after a road number indicate that the route leads north, south, east or west, respectively.
- Vegruteskiltet does not, by itself, require you to turn and does not change the speed limit, right of way or give-way obligation.
Tips
- Look for both the road number and any directional letter, especially where the same route can be reached in two directions.
- Compare the route symbol with your navigation or journey plan before you reach the junction.
- When the symbol is shown above or beside a particular lane, move into the lane leading to the desired route early.
- Continue following the same route symbol on later vegvisningsskilt if your destination is not listed every time.
Common misconceptions
- Some people think that N, S, Ø or V is part of the road number itself, but the letter shows the compass direction in which the route leads.
- The sign is confused with a direction sign requiring a particular turn; Vegruteskiltet primarily identifies the route.
- Learners assume that the sign provides information about right of way or road standard, but such rules must be indicated by other signs and road markings.

The route symbol can be repeated on orientation boards, direction signs and lane direction signs. This allows drivers to follow a numbered route through several junctions even when the local place names on the signs vary.
