Route marker sign
Symbols on route marker signs may be shown on other directional signs. Route marker signs indicating road numbers may show the letters N
When you see the sign
Check that the route symbol or road number matches the route you intend to follow. Use the sign to confirm your route choice, but continue to follow other direction signs for the correct exit and lane.
Rules
- A route sign identifies a specific road route using a route symbol, road number or other route designation.
- The symbol from a route sign may also appear on other direction signs to show which direction the route continues.
- The sign does not in itself require you to follow the route if you are travelling to a different destination.
- A route sign does not set the speed limit, right of way or give-way obligation.
Tips
- Compare the route symbol with your navigation or itinerary before reaching an intersection.
- Look for the same symbol on direction boards and guide signs when the route changes direction.
- Move into the correct lane early if the route is shown together with lane arrows.
- Do not rely solely on place names; the same destination may be reached via several routes.
Common misconceptions
- Some people think that a route sign shows a specific direction of travel. It primarily identifies the route, while arrows and other direction signs show the direction.
- Some confuse the sign with an ordinary guide sign showing a specific destination.
- Some assume that the route designation also indicates the applicable speed limit, but the speed limit must be read from separate signs and the general rules.
Test yourself
Easy
What does this sign mean?
- AIt identifies a particular road route with the route designation shown.
- BIt requires driving in the direction in which the route continues.
- CIt shows which destination the nearest lane leads to.
- DIt warns of an exit to a particular destination.
Medium
The route on the sign continues straight ahead, but an ordinary direction sign shows that your destination is to the right. What should you do?
- ATurn right and follow the direction signs towards your destination.
- BDrive straight ahead because the route designation gives a binding instruction.
- CStop before the intersection because the signs give conflicting instructions.
- DDrive straight ahead because all lanes follow the route shown.
Hard
What does the letter N in the route designation shown indicate?
- AThat the route leads in a northerly direction of travel.
- BThat the route is a national cycle route.
- CThat the route is a numbered motorveg.
- DThat the route is a national diversion route.
Theory test tip
In the theory test, the trap may be to choose that the sign shows a lane or imposes an obligation. Remember the difference: A route sign identifies a route, while direction boards and guide signs show how to drive to follow it.
Did you know
The route symbol does not always have to appear on a separate sign. Under the sign regulations, the symbol from a route sign may be repeated on other direction signs, allowing the driver to follow the same route through several intersections.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to follow the route shown by the route sign?
No, not if it does not suit your destination. The sign helps you recognise and follow a specific route.
Can the route symbol appear on an ordinary guide sign?
Yes. Symbols from route signs may appear on other direction signs to indicate which direction the route follows.
What is the difference between a route sign and a diagrammatic direction board?
A route sign identifies the route itself. A diagrammatic direction board shows how directions and destinations are distributed at an upcoming intersection.
Does the route sign indicate the applicable speed limit?
No. You must follow the separately posted speed limit or the general speed limit that applies at the location.
