Route marker sign
Symbols on route marker signs may be shown on other direction signs. Route marker signs indicating route numbers may show the letters N
When you see the sign
Check that the route symbol on sign 723.62 matches the route you intend to follow. Continue following the same symbol on subsequent vegvisningsskilt, and choose your lane well in advance when the route changes direction.
Rules
- The sign identifies a specific road route using a route symbol, rather than indicating a destination.
- The route symbol may also appear on other vegvisningsskilt to show which direction the route continues.
- You are not required to follow the route if you are travelling to a different destination.
- The sign does not change the speed limit, give way rules, right of way or lane-positioning rules.
Tips
- Remember what the route symbol looks like so that you recognise it on subsequent signs.
- Look for the symbol on orienteringstavler and vegvisere before junctions and exits.
- Do not rely solely on place names; the route symbol may be the clearest indication of the correct route.
- If the symbol points towards an exit, change lanes early and without crossing solid lines.
Common misconceptions
- Assuming that the sign requires all road users to follow the route shown.
- Confusing the vegruteskiltet with a vegviser indicating a specific destination.
- Assuming that the route symbol itself gives right of way or sets a speed limit.
Test yourself
Easy
What does this sign mean?
- AIt indicates a particular destination with a direction sign.
- BIt identifies a particular road route with a route symbol.
- CIt shows how vehicles should be positioned before an intersection.
- DIt shows which destinations the lanes are intended for.
Medium
You see this sign, but your destination is not along the route shown. What do you do?
- AI choose the road that leads to my destination.
- BI follow the route because it determines the direction of travel.
- CI follow the route because it has priority over other traffic further ahead.
- DI follow the route until another sign cancels it.
Hard
You want to follow exactly the route shown in the picture. At the next intersection, several route symbols are shown on other direction signs. Which one do you follow?
- AI follow the symbol with the same colour, but with a different value.
- BI follow the lane with the most destinations, regardless of which route symbol it has.
- CI follow the direction sign with the same destination, but without the route symbol.
- DI follow the symbol with the same route type and the same value as in the picture.
Theory test tip
In the theory test, the trap may be to choose that the sign determines the direction of travel or gives right of way. The correct understanding is that it identifies a route that you can follow by looking for the same symbol further along.
Did you know
A route symbol does not have to appear on a separate vegruteskilt throughout the entire route. Under skiltforskriften, the same symbol may be included on other vegvisningsskilt, allowing the route to be followed through several junctions.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to follow the route shown by sign 723.62?
No, not if it is not the route you intend to use. The sign provides route information and is not a mandatory sign.
What is the difference between a vegruteskilt and an ordinary vegviser?
A vegruteskilt identifies a continuous route using a symbol or route designation. An ordinary vegviser normally shows the direction to one or more destinations.
Can the route symbol appear on an orienteringstavle or vegviser?
Yes. Skiltforskriften allows symbols from vegruteskilt to be shown on other vegvisningsskilt to indicate where the route continues.
Does the sign introduce its own rules about speed or giving way?
No. You must follow speed-limit signs, vikepliktskilt, road markings and the general traffic rules regardless of the vegruteskiltet.
