Route marker sign
Symbols on route marker signs may be shown on other direction signs. Route marker signs indicating route numbers may show the letters N
When you see the sign
Check that the road number or route symbol matches the route you intend to follow. Look for an arrow, destination or the position on another vegvisningsskilt to determine the correct direction of travel, and change lanes in good time if necessary.
Rules
- A vegruteskilt identifies a specific road or route, usually by means of a road number or a separate route symbol.
- The symbol from the vegruteskilt may be reproduced on other vegvisningsskilt to show which direction you must choose to follow the route.
- The letters N, S, Ø and V together with a road number indicate the direction of the route: north, south, east or west.
- The sign itself does not grant right of way, require a particular direction of travel or indicate a specific speed limit.
Tips
- Follow both the road number and any directional letter, since the same road number may be signposted in two opposite directions.
- Look for the same route symbol on orienteringstavle and vegviser as you approach junctions or exits.
- Do not rely solely on the place name in your navigation system; also compare the road number with the signs.
- Move into the correct lane early when the route symbol is shown above or beside a particular lane.
Common misconceptions
- Many people think that the vegruteskilt alone requires them to turn, but the route symbol itself identifies the route; the arrow and other vegvisning indicate the direction.
- Some people confuse the sign with an orienteringstavle. An orienteringstavle shows how junctions or exits are laid out, while the vegruteskilt primarily indicates which route or road number is involved.
- A common mistake is to follow the correct road number in the wrong direction because the letter N, S, Ø or V is overlooked.
Test yourself
Easy
What does this sign mean?
- AIt requires a particular direction of travel at the intersection.
- BIt identifies a particular road or route.
- CIt shows how the next intersection is designed.
- DIt introduces a particular speed limit on the road.
Medium
You are to continue on route 65. The symbol is shown on a direction sign with an arrow pointing right. What should you do?
- AIncrease your speed to 65 km/t before turning right.
- BContinue straight ahead to follow route 65.
- CStop before the intersection because route 65 begins there.
- DChoose the road to the right to follow route 65.
Hard
You see the symbol with the number 65, but no arrow or depiction of the intersection. Which conclusion can you draw?
- AThat road or route 65 is identified, but the direction of travel is not shown.
- BThat exit number 65 is approaching, but its location is not shown.
- CThat the speed limit is 65 km/t, but the length of the section is not shown.
- DThat the intersection is 65 kilometres away, but its design is not shown.
Theory test tip
In the theory test, the trap may be that the vegruteskilt is confused with a mandatory-direction sign or an orienteringsskilt. Remember that it identifies a route; on its own, it does not show that you must turn, and it does not change right-of-way rules or the speed limit.
Did you know
Route symbols are used consistently on several types of Norwegian vegvisningsskilt. This allows drivers to recognise the same road or route on orienteringstavle, vegviser and bekreftelsesskilt.
Frequently asked questions
What does a vegruteskilt tell you?
It tells you which road or route the directions apply to, usually by means of a road number or route symbol. To find the correct direction, you must also read any arrow, directional letter or destination.
What do N, S, Ø or V next to the road number mean?
The letters indicate the main direction in which the route leads: north, south, east or west. They are important when the same road number can be followed in both directions.
Is a vegruteskilt the same as an ordinary vegviser?
No. An ordinary vegviser points towards a destination or road, while the vegruteskilt is the identifying marker for the route and may appear as a symbol on the vegviser.
Does the sign change the speed limit or right-of-way rules?
No. The vegruteskilt provides route information and does not change the traffic rules at the location. The speed limit and right-of-way rules must be determined from separate signs, road markings and the general traffic regulations.
