Route marker sign
Symbols on route marker signs may be shown on other direction signs. Route marker signs indicating route numbers may show the letters N
When you see the sign
Use the vegruteskiltet to check that you are following the correct numbered or named route. If you are changing routes, you must also follow the arrows and destinations on the other vegvisningsskilt and move into the correct lane well in advance.
Rules
- The sign identifies a specific road route and is used primarily for orientation and route selection.
- The symbol from the vegruteskiltet may be shown as part of other vegvisningsskilt.
- The sign does not by itself require you to drive in a particular direction; the direction is indicated by arrows or other vegvisningsskilt.
- The sign does not establish a speed limit, right of way or other traffic regulations.
- The letters and numbers on the sign are a route designation that helps the driver distinguish the route from other road routes.
Tips
- Compare the route symbol and number with the route you have planned, not just with the place names.
- Look for the same route symbol on subsequent signs to confirm that you are still on the correct route.
- If the route symbol is shown together with an arrow, follow the arrow only if you are actually entering the indicated route.
- At complicated junctions, you should read the lane and orientation signs early, because the vegruteskiltet alone does not show which lane you should use.
Common misconceptions
- Some people think that the vegruteskiltet requires them to follow the route, but it is a vegvisningsskilt that identifies the route.
- The sign is confused with a regular direction sign or table direction sign, which also shows directions and destinations.
- A common mistake is to interpret the route number as a speed limit or as the distance to a destination.
Test yourself
Easy
What does this sign mean?
- AIt identifies a particular road route.
- BIt sets the highest permitted speed on the road.
- CIt shows the lanes approaching an intersection.
- DIt indicates the direction to a particular destination.
Medium
You want to follow the route shown. At the intersection, an arrow on a direction sign points left. What do you do?
- AI adjust my speed to the number shown in the route symbol.
- BI turn left and follow the arrow on the direction sign.
- CI choose the lane closest to the route symbol.
- DI drive straight ahead because the route symbol determines the direction.
Hard
How should the letter N on this variant be understood?
- AIt forms part of the route designation that distinguishes the route from other road routes.
- BIt indicates that you must drive in a northerly direction.
- CIt indicates that the road is always a national tourist road.
- DIt indicates which lane you must use further ahead.
Theory test tip
In the theory test, you may be asked whether the sign determines the lane, direction of travel or speed limit. The key point is that it identifies a road route; arrows and other vegvisningsskilt show where you should drive.
Did you know
The vegrutesymbolet can be repeated on other vegvisningsskilt. This allows the driver to follow the same route through several junctions without a separate vegruteskilt having to be put up each time.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to follow the route shown by the vegruteskiltet?
No, the sign provides route guidance and identifies the route. You follow it if it matches your destination or your planned route.
Does the vegruteskiltet show which lane I should use?
Not on its own. The lane is indicated by a lane direction sign, lane orientation sign, overhead orientation sign or other road markings and signs.
Is the number on the vegruteskiltet a speed limit?
No, the number is part of the route designation. A speed limit is indicated by a separate round speed-limit sign.
What is the difference between a vegruteskilt and a regular direction sign?
The vegruteskilt identifies the route itself using a symbol, letter or number. A regular direction sign points towards a destination or route and shows which direction you should drive.
