How the theory test works
Knowing exactly what to expect on test day makes a difference for your nerves. Here are the practical details about the theory test — number of questions, scoring, booking and what you must bring — so you can go in prepared rather than unsure.
Rules & Regulations
- The car theory test (category B) consists of a total of 70 questions, of which 5 are unscored trial questions that do not count toward the result — 65 questions are scored.
- To pass you need at least 52 of the 65 scored questions correct, that is 80 percent.
- The theory test is booked and administered via the Swedish Transport Administration (website or customer service) and is taken on a computer at their test centers.
- You must bring valid photo identification (e.g., national ID card or passport) to take the test — without approved ID you are normally not allowed to enter.
- Mobile phones and other private electronic devices may not be used in the exam room during the test; items must be handed in according to the instructions of the exam invigilator.
- You will receive your result immediately after you finish the test on the test computer.
- You must have completed both the first risk education course (Risk 1) and the second risk education course (Risk 2) BEFORE you are allowed to take the theory test — not only before the driving test.
- A passed theory test is valid for 1 year to allow time to take the driving test — this was increased from 4 months to 1 year on 19 August 2026.
- You may only take one knowledge test per day for the same license category — if you fail you cannot rebook to take it again the same day.
Tips for Drivers
- Practice full theory tests under timed conditions so you get used to both the number of questions and the speed needed to read and answer.
- Read every question and all answer options carefully — trial questions look identical to regular questions, so don't assume any question is unscored.
- Arrive early to the test center with valid ID and your booking confirmation to avoid stress and administrative issues.
- Practice using the elimination method: remove clearly incorrect options first to increase your chance of choosing the correct answer.
- Arrive at least 30 minutes before your test time for photography before the test begins.
Common Mistakes
- Believing that trial questions affect your score — they are shown without marking but are not included in the points.
- Underestimating the time and getting stuck on a difficult question for too long instead of answering and moving on.
- Arriving without valid photo ID or with the wrong type of ID, which can result in being denied the opportunity to take the test.
Exam Tip
Pay extra attention to questions that combine several conditions (for example road conditions + speed limit + vehicle category). Read the entire question and all answer options before choosing — sometimes one condition makes an otherwise correct option incorrect.
Did You Know?
The theory test is partly used to trial new questions: some questions on the test are trial items that collect data for future test content and do not affect your score.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do I have to complete the theory test?
The test time is 50 minutes.
Do I need a driving permit to take the theory test?
Yes, you must have a valid learner's permit from the Swedish Transport Agency to book and take the theory test.
Can I get accommodations (e.g. text-to-speech or more time) at the test?
Yes — special accommodations such as extended time, an oral exam or interpreter assistance are available for conditions including dyslexia, ADHD, autism and language disorders. Headphones to listen to the questions in Swedish and calculators are also provided at the test location.
How long is a passed theory test valid?
Since 19 August 2026, a passed theory test is valid for 1 year to allow time to take the driving test; previously it was only 4 months.
Do I have to wait a certain time if I fail?
No, there is no mandatory waiting period from the Swedish Transport Administration — you can rebook immediately. The only limitation is that you may only take one knowledge test per day for the same license category. How quickly you can actually get in depends on available slots, which are often scarcer in smaller towns than in large cities.
