Which driving licence should I get?

Source: Trafikverket / Transportstyrelsen · 2026

Sweden has several different driving licence categories, depending on what you want to drive and how old you are. Here’s a quick overview of the most common ones — B, BE, AM and A — plus links to everything you need to know about the theory test for each category.

Category What you can drive Minimum age Theory test
AM Class I moped 15 years 70 questions, 50 min
B Passenger car, light trailer (max. 3,500 kg combined) 18 years 70 questions, 50 min
BE Passenger car with a heavier trailer (requires B) 18 years 60 questions, 40 min
A1 / A2 / A Motorcycle (light / power-limited / unrestricted) 16 / 18 / 20–24 years 70 questions, 50 min (the same for all three)

AM — Class I moped

If you’re 15 or older and want to ride a Class I moped (max. 45 km/h), AM is the right category for you. It’s usually the first driving licence people get. Learn more about the AM theory test.

B — passenger car

The most common driving licence. It entitles you to drive a passenger car and a light truck (max. 3,500 kg gross vehicle weight), as well as tow a light trailer. Learn more about the B theory test.

BE — car with a heavy trailer

An addition to a B driving licence for anyone who wants to tow a trailer that is too heavy for a standard B licence (for example, a heavier caravan). You must already hold a B licence. Learn more about the BE theory test.

A1, A2, A — motorcycle

Motorcycle licences come in three stages, depending on your age and the motorcycle’s power. The theory test (knowledge test) is the same for all three — only the driving test differs when you upgrade. Learn more about the A theory test.
