The Category A motorcycle theory test is the written knowledge test you must pass before taking the practical driving test. It uses the same test format as the Category B test, but the questions focus on motorcycles rather than cars.

A1, A2, and A — the same theory, different practical tests

Motorcycle licences come in three stages: A1 (light motorcycles, from age 16), A2 (motorcycles with restricted power, from age 18), and A (full motorcycle licence, from age 20 with two years of A2 experience, or from age 24 otherwise). The Swedish Transport Agency uses a common knowledge base for all three categories, so the knowledge test is the same for each. If you move from A1 or A2 to the next category, you only need to take a new practical driving test, not another theory test.

What the test covers

The questions cover everything a motorcyclist needs to know: traffic rules and right-of-way rules, motorcycle knowledge and safety equipment (helmets and protective clothing), riding skills such as balance, cornering, and braking on two wheels, blind spots from the perspective of other road users, as well as risk assessment and traffic psychology specifically adapted to motorcyclists riding in mixed traffic.

How to prepare effectively

Most people who pass the test on their first attempt have practised systematically with questions in the same format as the real test, rather than simply reading through the theory once.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to take the theory test again if I move from A2 to A?

No. The theory test (knowledge test) is the same for A1, A2, and A, so you only need to take a new practical driving test to upgrade.

Is the Category A theory test harder than the Category B theory test?

The format is identical (70 questions, 52 correct answers required, 50 minutes); the content is what differs, since the questions focus on motorcycles rather than cars.

Can I retake the test on the same day if I fail?

No, you must wait at least 14 days before booking another attempt.
