The BE theory test is the knowledge test you need to take to drive a car with a trailer that is too heavy for a standard B driving licence. The test is shorter than the B test but builds on the same traffic knowledge, with a focus on vehicle combinations (car + trailer).

Who needs a BE driving licence?

With a standard B driving licence, you may tow a trailer as long as the car and trailer's combined maximum authorised mass does not exceed 3,500 kg (or if the trailer's maximum authorised mass does not exceed the car's kerb weight). If the vehicle combination weighs more than that — for example, a heavier caravan or a larger transport trailer — you need a BE driving licence. The difference between gross weight (the actual weight at that moment) and kerb weight (the vehicle's weight in road-ready condition without a load) is a common topic on the test.

What the test covers

The questions cover topics specific to vehicle combinations: weight terminology (gross weight, kerb weight, maximum trailer weight), securing loads, how the trailer affects braking distance and handling, reversing with a trailer, coupling devices and trailer inspection requirements, as well as speed limits that apply when towing a heavy trailer.

Validity and after passing the test

A passed BE knowledge test is valid for 1 year — you must book and pass the driving test within that period; otherwise, the knowledge test expires and you will have to take it again.
