The AM licence theory test (Class I moped) is the written knowledge test you must pass before taking the practical driving test. It uses the same test format as the car theory test, but the questions focus on mopeds rather than cars.

What the test covers

The questions cover everything a moped rider needs to know: traffic rules and right-of-way rules, moped mechanics and maintenance (engine, brakes, tyres), safety equipment such as helmets and protective clothing, where you may and may not ride a moped (for example, motorways, expressways, and in some cases cycle paths), speed limits, as well as risk assessment and traffic psychology for two-wheeled vehicles in mixed traffic.

How to book the test

You book your knowledge test directly with the Swedish Transport Administration, either at trafikverket.se or by phone. You need a valid driving licence permit before you can book the test. You can apply for one from the age of 14 years and 9 months, but you can take the test no earlier than the age of 15. The test is held at one of the Swedish Transport Administration's driving test centres.

How to prepare effectively

Most people who pass the test on their first attempt have practised systematically with questions in the same format as the real test, rather than simply reading through the theory once. If you (or your child) are unsure whether the difficulty lies in the theory or in the Swedish terminology, it can make a big difference to first learn the theory in full in the language you are most comfortable with.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the AM theory test easier than the car theory test?

No, the format is identical (70 questions, 52 correct answers required, 50 minutes). The content is what differs, as the questions focus on mopeds rather than cars.

Do I need a driving licence permit before booking the test?

Yes. You can apply for an AM driving licence permit from the age of 14 years and 9 months, but you cannot take the knowledge test until you are 15 years old.

Can I retake the test on the same day if I fail?

No, you must wait at least 14 days before you can book another attempt.
