When you see the Zeichen

Use the place name shown for orientation and continue to follow the traffic rules that applied before. The place-name sign alone neither imposes a 50 km/h speed limit nor marks the beginning of a geschlossene Ortschaft; however, watch for additional traffic signs and possible hazards caused by buildings or junctions.

Rules

  • Zeichen 385 serves exclusively as an indication of the name of a place, district or settlement.
  • The place-name sign does not legally mark the beginning of a geschlossene Ortschaft.
  • The sign does not automatically impose a speed limit of 50 km/h; any previously imposed maximum speed continues to apply.
  • The sign changes neither Vorfahrt rules nor parking or overtaking regulations.

Tips

  • Do not confuse the green place-name sign with yellow lettering and a yellow border with the yellow Ortstafel after Zeichen 310.
  • When passing the sign, check which speed limit applied before it instead of automatically slowing down to 50 km/h.
  • Despite the unchanged legal situation, expect driveways, pedestrians or slow-moving traffic near the settlement indicated and adjust your speed if necessary.

Common misunderstandings

  • !Many learner drivers mistake the place-name sign for an Ortstafel and therefore incorrectly assume that a general 50 km/h speed limit applies from that point.
  • !The sign is mistakenly understood as an independent speed limit.
  • !Some people believe that the sign automatically changes Vorfahrt or parking rules, as within a geschlossene Ortschaft.

Exam tip

In exam questions, the trap usually lies in the difference from the yellow Ortstafel: Zeichen 385 only provides information about the place name. The answer that you may now automatically drive at no more than 50 km/h is therefore incorrect.

Did you know

The place-name sign is often used to name small settlements, hamlets or districts without giving them the legal effect of a geschlossene Ortschaft under traffic law.

Frequently asked questions

What does the place-name sign mean?

It gives the name of a place, district or settlement and serves as an orientation aid. It does not impose any requirements or prohibitions of its own.

Does a 50 km/h speed limit automatically apply from Zeichen 385?

No, the place-name sign does not mark the beginning of a geschlossene Ortschaft. Without another restriction, the previously applicable speed limit remains in force.

How does Zeichen 385 differ from the Ortstafel?

The place-name sign is green with yellow lettering and a yellow border and serves only as an information sign. The yellow Ortstafel after Zeichen 310, on the other hand, marks the beginning of a geschlossene Ortschaft, from which a maximum speed of 50 km/h generally applies.

May a passenger car without a trailer continue past the sign at 100 km/h?

If the road is still outside a built-up area, no lower maximum speed has been imposed and the traffic situation permits it, the permitted maximum speed is generally 100 km/h. Regardless of this, the speed must be adapted to visibility, traffic and possible hazards.
