Cycle expressway
The sign is placed at cycle expressways. It serves to provide information about the beginning of cycle expressways and to guide cycle expressways at junctions.

When you see the Zeichen
Expect a route designed especially for fast, high-volume cycle traffic, and pay particular attention to cyclists at junctions. The sign itself neither grants Vorfahrt nor prohibits motor vehicles; additional traffic signs, traffic lights and road markings are decisive.
Rules
- Zeichen 350.1 indicates the beginning of a cycle superhighway or continues to direct traffic along it at a junction.
- The sign alone does not make its use compulsory for cyclists; this may be ordered by Zeichen 237, 240 or 241.
- The cycle superhighway does not automatically have Vorfahrt. Vorfahrt is determined by traffic lights, signs regulating Vorfahrt or, if none are present, the rule of priority to the right.
- Zeichen 350.1 does not automatically prohibit motor vehicles from entering. The specific traffic routing and additional traffic signs determine whether, and which, vehicles may use an area.
- The end of a correspondingly marked cycle superhighway is indicated by Zeichen 350.2.
Tips
- Look for the continuation of the cycle superhighway well in advance at intersections, as Zeichen 350.1 is also used there for route guidance.
- When turning, check your interior and exterior mirrors as well as your blind spot particularly carefully, as cyclists on cycle superhighways may be travelling at a relatively steady speed.
- Keep cycle crossings and waiting areas clear, especially if heavy traffic means you cannot cross an intersection completely.
- Do not rely on the design or colour of the cycle facility; instead, observe the traffic lights, road markings and signs regulating Vorfahrt that are actually present.
Common misunderstandings
- The sign is confused with Zeichen 350.2. Zeichen 350.1 marks the beginning or route of the cycle superhighway, while Zeichen 350.2 indicates its end.
- Many learner drivers assume that cyclists always have Vorfahrt on a cycle superhighway. However, the sign does not establish an independent Vorfahrt rule.
- Some people mistake Zeichen 350.1 for a circular cycle-path sign that makes its use compulsory. It is, however, an information sign and does not by itself make its use compulsory.
Exam tip
Watch out in exam questions for the trap of attributing Vorfahrt or compulsory use to the sign. The correct answer is: Zeichen 350.1 provides information about the beginning or route of the cycle superhighway; binding rules on how to proceed and Vorfahrt are established by additional signs, traffic lights and road markings.
Did you know
Zeichen 350.1 and 350.2 were added to the StVO in 2020. Cycle superhighways are intended in particular to indicate longer, fast and largely uninterrupted routes for cycle traffic.
Frequently asked questions
As a cyclist, do I have to use a cycle superhighway marked with Zeichen 350.1?
Not solely because of Zeichen 350.1. Use is compulsory only if this is ordered by a corresponding circular blue cycle-path sign, such as Zeichen 237, 240 or 241.
Do cyclists have Vorfahrt at every intersection on the cycle superhighway?
No. Vorfahrt is regulated by traffic lights and traffic signs; if these are absent, the rule of priority to the right generally applies.
Am I allowed to enter a cycle superhighway by car?
Zeichen 350.1 alone does not prohibit entry. Whether the particular carriageway or traffic area may be used by a motor vehicle depends on its structural design and any additional mandatory or prohibitory signs.
How can I recognise the end of the cycle superhighway?
The end is marked by Zeichen 350.2. Regardless of this, the traffic routing and applicable regulations may already change at intersections due to additional signs or road markings.
