Tourist information

When you see the Zeichen
The sign indicates a tourist attraction or a destination of tourist interest. If you want to go there, follow the direction shown without braking abruptly or changing lanes; otherwise, continue driving normally.
Rules
- Zeichen 386.1 is used exclusively for tourist information and does not prescribe any specific driving behaviour.
- It establishes neither a speed limit nor a Vorfahrt or waiting obligation.
- You are not required to follow the information or the direction shown.
- Mandatory traffic signs, traffic lights and road markings continue to apply regardless of this tourist information.
Tips
- Look for the brown background and the white symbol or lettering; these make the tourist information easy to recognise.
- If you want to drive to the destination, check the directional arrow and lanes early and move into the correct lane in good time.
- If you miss a turn, continue safely and look for a suitable new route instead of braking suddenly or turning around.
Common misunderstandings
- Learner drivers mistakenly regard the information as an instruction and believe they must follow the direction shown.
- The brown sign is confused with mandatory route guidance or a speed instruction.
- Some people automatically expect slower traffic because of a tourist attraction; however, this does not itself indicate a specific speed limit.
Exam tip
The typical exam trap is whether you must follow the sign or reduce your speed. Neither is mandatory solely because of Zeichen 386.1; additional traffic signs and the actual traffic situation remain decisive.
Did you know
The brown design deliberately distinguishes tourist information from the usual route guidance. For example, it can identify destinations of cultural, scenic or historical significance without prescribing a traffic rule.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to turn towards the tourist destination shown?
No. The sign merely provides information about the destination; you can continue following your current route.
Does Zeichen 386.1 prescribe a lower speed?
No, the sign does not contain a speed limit. A lower maximum speed applies only if it is prescribed by another sign or follows from the general regulations.
Does the tourist information change the Vorfahrt?
No. Vorfahrt continues to be determined by traffic lights, traffic signs regulating Vorfahrt or, where no such rules apply, the right-before-left rule.
Am I allowed to stop suddenly to read the sign?
No. You must not endanger or obstruct traffic by braking abruptly or stopping where prohibited; continue driving if necessary and find your bearings later.
