When you see the Zeichen

Do not drive on the section of road marked by the mobile barrier board, and follow the flashing arrow on the indicated side. If necessary, change lanes early while observing the traffic behind you; if the warning lights show red, the entire carriageway is closed.

Rules

  • You must not drive on the marked section of road.
  • The flashing arrow indicates which side of the barrier board traffic must pass.
  • Yellow light or yellow flashing light warns of the barrier, while red light indicates that the entire carriageway is closed.
  • The barrier board may be stationary or mounted on a slow-moving work or safety vehicle.
  • Rumble strips that can be driven over across the direction of travel may be placed in front of the barrier board.

Tips

  • Observe the flashing arrow early and move into the indicated lane in good time.
  • Before changing lanes, check your mirrors and blind spot, and do not endanger traffic in the adjacent lane.
  • Reduce your speed because workers, vehicles or roadworks equipment may be behind the board.
  • Expect rumble strips that can be driven over in front of the barrier board, and drive over them slowly and in a controlled manner.

Common misunderstandings

  • !The flashing arrow is understood merely as a non-binding recommendation. In fact, you must not drive on the closed section of road, and traffic is directed past it in the direction of the arrow.
  • !Yellow flashing light is confused with a complete closure of the carriageway. A closure of the entire carriageway is indicated by red light.
  • !Zeichen 616 is confused with the mobile barrier board according to Zeichen 615. Zeichen 616 also has the distinctive flashing arrow for directing traffic.

Exam tip

In exam images, pay particular attention to the direction of the flashing arrow and the colour of the warning lights. A typical trap is assuming that you may freely choose which side to pass on, or that red light merely means increased caution.

Did you know

Zeichen 616 is often used to secure mobile or short-term roadworks, for example behind mowing, cleaning or maintenance vehicles on Autobahn.

Frequently asked questions

May I pass the barrier board on the other side if there is space there?

No. The marked section of road is closed, and the flashing arrow indicates the designated side for passing.

What does red light on the mobile barrier board mean?

Red light means that the entire carriageway is closed. You must not pass the barrier board and must wait for further traffic instructions or follow a signposted diversion.

Do I have to change lanes immediately because of the flashing arrow?

You must follow the indicated traffic direction, but you must not force a lane change. Change lanes early as soon as this is possible without endangering others.

What is the difference between Zeichen 616 and Zeichen 615?

Both are mobile barrier boards and close the marked section of road. Zeichen 616 also has a flashing arrow that indicates the direction for passing particularly clearly.
