When you see the Zeichen
Do not drive on the section of road marked by the delineator board, arrow board or diagonal-stripe board. Follow the indicated side for passing, move into position early and pass through the narrowed section with sufficient lateral clearance.
Rules
- You must not drive on the marked section of road; the board directs traffic around it.
- On an arrow board, the arrow indicates the side or direction in which the obstacle or closed-off area must be passed.
- On a diagonal-stripe board, the downward-sloping stripes point towards the permitted side for passing.
- Zeichen 605 does not, by itself, impose a specific maximum speed; however, any additional speed-limit signs must be obeyed.
- As a traffic control device, the board takes precedence over general traffic rules where those rules are incompatible with its arrangement.
Tips
- Identify the direction of the arrows or diagonal stripes early and do not wait until you are immediately in front of the board to change lanes.
- At roadworks in particular, expect narrowed or diverted lanes and reduce your speed according to the actual situation.
- Keep a sufficient distance from the boards without moving into an adjacent lane or oncoming traffic.
- At night, also look out for yellow warning lights, but do not rely on them alone; pay attention to the arrows, diagonal stripes and road markings as well.
Common misunderstandings
- The board is treated as merely a non-binding warning. In fact, you must not drive on the section of road it marks.
- Learner drivers confuse the direction of the arrows or diagonal stripes and pass on the wrong side.
- Zeichen 605 is confused with a delineator post: delineator posts mark the course of the road, whereas boards secure a closed-off area or obstacle and direct traffic around it.
Exam tip
In exam questions, the key point is that the marked area is off-limits and must not simply be driven over with extra caution. Also pay close attention to where the arrow or downward-sloping stripes point; that side determines where you must pass.
Did you know
Zeichen 605 includes several versions: a delineator board, an arrow board and a diagonal-stripe board. The arrow board makes the required side for passing particularly clear and is often used at roadworks or where the road is diverted.
Frequently asked questions
May I drive between two delineator boards?
No, if the boards mark off a closed section of road. You must follow the clearly unobstructed route for traffic and must not drive through the barrier.
Does Zeichen 605 prescribe a specific speed?
No, the board does not include its own numerical speed limit. However, you must adapt your speed to the narrowed section, the course of the road and any additional traffic signs.
How does a delineator board differ from a traffic cone?
Both can mark closed-off areas and direct traffic around them. The tall board usually indicates the traffic route more clearly with arrows or diagonal stripes, while traffic cones often mark shorter or smaller-scale closures.
What do warning lights on a board mean?
A yellow light or yellow flashing light draws attention to the barrier and the traffic routing. Red lights are used when the entire carriageway is closed; the specific side for passing is determined by the complete traffic-control arrangement.
