When you see the Zeichen

Follow the lane indicated by the traffic guide threshold and pass on the side indicated by the arrow or hatched marker. Do not drive over the traffic guide threshold, and adjust your speed and lateral clearance to the narrowed or shifted traffic routing.

Rules

  • The traffic guide threshold visibly and physically separates traffic areas or lanes from one another and is not intended to be driven over.
  • An arrow marker uses its arrow to indicate the side on which you must pass.
  • On a hatched marker, the hatching slopes down towards the side on which traffic is directed to pass.
  • The traffic guide threshold itself does not prescribe a specific maximum speed; any existing speed signs and the local conditions are decisive.
  • Even where the traffic guide thresholds are arranged in a broken line, you must not drive between the elements onto the separated area on your own initiative.

Tips

  • Identify the indicated passing side early and move into the correct position in good time without forcing other road users out of their path.
  • Keep a sufficient lateral clearance from the marker and the raised threshold, especially in narrow lanes through roadworks.
  • In darkness or wet conditions, watch the course of the entire row of thresholds rather than just the nearest marker.
  • In the area around the traffic guide threshold, expect a narrowing of the carriageway, a lane shift or oncoming traffic in an unusual position.

Common misunderstandings

  • !The traffic guide threshold is confused with a warning threshold that can be driven over. Zeichen 628 is used to guide traffic and must not be driven over.
  • !Learner drivers focus only on the red-and-white design and overlook which passing side the arrow or hatching indicates.
  • !Some assume that it imposes a fixed speed limit. However, this only follows from an additional speed sign or from the obligation to adapt your speed to the circumstances.

Exam tip

In exam questions, it is often crucial not to confuse Zeichen 628 with a warning threshold laid across the direction of travel that can be driven over. The correct response is to follow the indicated traffic routing, pass on the designated side and not drive over the traffic guide threshold.

Did you know

Traffic guide thresholds are often used in roadworks to separate lanes temporarily and more clearly than markings alone can. The raised arrow or hatched marker makes the course visible from a greater distance and in darkness.

Frequently asked questions

May I drive over a traffic guide threshold to change lanes?

No, the traffic guide threshold is intended to separate and guide traffic and is not designed to be driven over. You may change lanes only where the traffic routing and road markings permit it.

Which side does a hatched marker indicate?

The hatching slopes down towards the side on which you must pass. On an arrow marker, the arrow directly indicates the designated passing side.

Does Zeichen 628 automatically mean a specific maximum speed?

No, the traffic guide threshold alone does not impose a fixed maximum speed. Nevertheless, you must choose a speed that allows you to negotiate the narrow or shifted traffic routing safely.

How does a traffic guide threshold differ from a single delineator?

A delineator is a vertical guidance element, whereas a traffic guide threshold also consists of a long, raised body on the road surface. Zeichen 628 combines this threshold with an arrow or hatched marker and therefore separates traffic areas from one another particularly clearly.
