When you see the Zeichen
Come to a complete stop at the stop line and give Vorfahrt to traffic on the priority road. If there is no stop line, you must stop where you can see the other road clearly without obstructing traffic with Vorfahrt.
Rules
- The vehicle must come to a complete stop; simply rolling slowly is not sufficient.
- If there is a stop line, you must first stop at it. If the intersection cannot be seen clearly enough from there, you may then proceed cautiously to the line of sight and must stop there again if necessary.
- If there is no stop line, you must stop at the point from which you can see the other road clearly.
- You must give Vorfahrt to traffic on the priority road.
- You must not stop up to 10 m before the sign if doing so would obscure it.
Tips
- Plan your stop in good time and brake so that your vehicle comes to a complete stop before the stop line.
- Make the stop clear by waiting briefly and carefully checking both directions of traffic.
- If your view is blocked at the stop line, move forward slowly to the line of sight after making the initial stop.
- In addition to motor vehicles, pay particular attention to bicycles, motorcycles and other road users with Vorfahrt who may be difficult to see.
Common misunderstandings
- The sign is confused with Zeichen 205 “Vorfahrt gewähren”. With Zeichen 206, coming to a complete stop is always mandatory, even when no other traffic is visible.
- Some learner drivers stop only at the line of sight even though a stop line is present. You must always stop at the stop line first.
- Rolling forward very slowly is mistaken for stopping. To stop correctly, the wheels must actually come to a standstill.
Exam tip
A typical exam trap shows a stop line from which the intersection cannot be seen clearly. The correct approach is: first come to a complete stop at the stop line, then proceed cautiously to the line of sight and stop there again if necessary.
Did you know
Zeichen 206 is the only German traffic sign with its characteristic octagonal shape. This means its meaning can be recognised from its shape even when it is difficult to read or viewed from the back.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to stop if the road is obviously clear?
Yes. Zeichen 206 requires a complete stop regardless of the traffic situation; merely slowing down or rolling is not sufficient.
Where do I stop if there is a stop line?
You must first stop before the stop line. If you cannot see traffic with Vorfahrt well enough from there, you then proceed slowly to the line of sight and stop there again if necessary.
Where must I stop if there is no stop line?
You must stop where you can see the other road clearly. You must not proceed so far that you endanger or significantly obstruct traffic with Vorfahrt.
What is the most important difference from Zeichen 205 “Vorfahrt gewähren”?
With both signs, you must give Vorfahrt. Zeichen 206 additionally always requires a complete stop, whereas with Zeichen 205 you may continue without stopping if the traffic situation safely permits it.
