Give way (Vorfahrt gewähren.)
Prohibition or requirement 1. Anyone driving a vehicle must give Vorfahrt. 2. Anyone driving a vehicle must not stop up to 10 m before this sign if this would obscure it. Explanation The sign is located immediately before the intersection or junction. It may be announced by the same sign with an Zusatzzeichen indicating the distance.

When you see the Zeichen
Reduce your speed early and watch the traffic on the road with priority. You must wait if vehicles with Vorfahrt are approaching or if you would obstruct or endanger them. If the road is clear and you have sufficient visibility, you may continue without coming to a complete stop.
Rules
- You must give Vorfahrt gewähren to traffic on the road with priority, regardless of whether it is coming from the left or the right.
- Coming to a complete stop is not generally required; it is only necessary if the traffic situation or visibility conditions make it necessary.
- You must not stop within 10 m of the sign if doing so would obscure it.
- The sign is generally positioned immediately before the intersection or junction; advance warning is given by Zeichen 205 with a Zusatzzeichen indicating the distance.
Tips
- Approach slowly enough that you can safely wait before the intersection or at any existing stop line if necessary.
- Also watch for bicycles and other vehicles with Vorfahrt, especially on cycle paths running parallel to the road.
- If visibility is restricted, you may cautiously move forward to a point from which you can see along the road with priority.
Common misunderstandings
- Zeichen 205 is confused with Zeichen 206: with Zeichen 205, coming to a complete stop is not required, whereas with the stop sign it is.
- Some learner drivers only look out for vehicles coming from the left. However, you must also give Vorfahrt gewähren to traffic with Vorfahrt coming from the right.
- The sign does not mean that you always have to wait for a long time. If the road with priority is clear and easy to see along, you may continue driving.
Exam tip
A typical exam trap is the question of whether you must always stop at Zeichen 205. The correct answer is: You must give Vorfahrt gewähren, but you only have to come to a complete stop if traffic or insufficient visibility makes this necessary.
Did you know
Zeichen 205 can also be clearly identified from the back because of its triangular shape standing on its point. This makes it easier for other road users to assess the Vorfahrt rule at an intersection.
Frequently asked questions
Do I always have to brake to a complete stop at Zeichen 205?
No. If the road with priority is clear and easy to see along, you may continue at an appropriate speed. You only need to stop if you would otherwise be unable to give Vorfahrt gewähren safely.
Where must I wait if there is a stop line?
You should wait at the stop line when you have to give Vorfahrt gewähren. If visibility is insufficient there, you may then cautiously move forward to the line of sight without obstructing traffic with Vorfahrt.
What is the difference between Zeichen 205 and the stop sign?
At Zeichen 205, you must give Vorfahrt gewähren, but you are not necessarily required to stop. At Zeichen 206, you must always come to a complete stop and then also give Vorfahrt gewähren.
Can Zeichen 205 be positioned before the actual intersection?
As a regular Vorfahrt sign, it is positioned immediately before the intersection or junction. Advance warning is possible with another Zeichen 205 and a Zusatzzeichen indicating the distance.
