Priority road (Vorfahrtstraße) (Zeichen 306)

Priority road (Vorfahrtstraße)

Priority signs Zeichen 306

Prohibition or requirement Anyone driving a vehicle may not park outside built-up areas on the carriageways of Vorfahrtstraßen. The sign indicates that Vorfahrt applies up to the next sign 205 “Vorfahrt gewähren.”, 206 “Halt. Vorfahrt gewähren.” or 307 “Ende der Vorfahrtstraße”.

When you see the Zeichen

From this sign onward, you are on a Vorfahrtstraße and have Vorfahrt at the following intersections and junctions. Nevertheless, keep an eye on the rest of the traffic and check whether the course of the Vorfahrtstraße is shown by a Zusatzzeichen.

Rules

  • Vorfahrt continues beyond the next intersection or junction until you reach Zeichen 205, 206 or 307.
  • At intersections and junctions on the Vorfahrtstraße, the “priority to the right” rule does not apply.
  • Outside a geschlossene Ortschaft, you may not park on the carriageway of a Vorfahrtstraße.
  • Within a geschlossene Ortschaft, Zeichen 306 alone does not constitute a Parkverbot.
  • At a bending Vorfahrtstraße, you must signal if you follow the marked bend in the road.

Tips

  • Even though you have Vorfahrt, expect other road users to overlook the sign or misjudge your speed.
  • At intersections, look for Zusatzzeichen showing the course of a bending Vorfahrtstraße with a thick line.
  • Before parking outside a geschlossene Ortschaft, check whether you are still on the Vorfahrtstraße; there, the Parkverbot applies to the carriageway.
  • Look out for Zeichen 205, 206 or 307, as one of these signs ends the current Vorfahrt arrangement.

Common misunderstandings

  • !Zeichen 306 is confused with Zeichen 301: Zeichen 301 gives you Vorfahrt only at the next intersection or junction, whereas Zeichen 306 marks a continuing Vorfahrtstraße.
  • !Many learner drivers believe that parking is never permitted on a Vorfahrtstraße. However, the special Parkverbot applies only outside a geschlossene Ortschaft and only on the carriageway.
  • !Drivers often fail to signal at a bending Vorfahrtstraße, even though following the bend constitutes a change of direction.

Exam tip

A typical exam trap is the difference between Zeichen 306 and Zeichen 301: Zeichen 306 remains in effect until you reach a sign cancelling Vorfahrt, while Zeichen 301 announces Vorfahrt only at the next intersection or junction.

Did you know

Zeichen 306 is particularly easy to identify because of its shape as a square standing on one corner. A Vorfahrtstraße can therefore often even be recognised from the back of the sign.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Zeichen 306 remain in effect?

The Vorfahrtstraße remains in effect until Zeichen 205 “Vorfahrt gewähren”, Zeichen 206 “Halt. Vorfahrt gewähren” or Zeichen 307 “Ende der Vorfahrtstraße”. It does not automatically end after the next intersection.

Am I allowed to park on a Vorfahrtstraße?

Within a geschlossene Ortschaft, Zeichen 306 alone does not prohibit parking. Outside a geschlossene Ortschaft, you may not park on the carriageway of a Vorfahrtstraße; additional Haltverbot and Parkverbot rules must also be observed.

Do I have to signal at a bending Vorfahrtstraße?

Yes, if you follow the bend in the Vorfahrtstraße and this changes your direction of travel. If you leave the Vorfahrtstraße by continuing straight ahead, you do not signal merely because you are leaving it, provided there is no other change of direction.

Do I always have unrestricted Vorfahrt with Zeichen 306?

You have Vorfahrt at the following intersections and junctions until the arrangement is cancelled. Nevertheless, you must remain ready to brake and may not assert your Vorfahrt recklessly.
