Distance sign
The sign gives advance warning of a level crossing indicated by sign 134 or 135.
When you see the sign
You are approaching a level crossing and have reached the middle of the three distance markers. Adjust your speed, look for warning lights, the barrier and trains, and be prepared to stop before the level crossing.
Rules
- Skilt 136.2 has two diagonal stripes and is positioned between the distance marker with three stripes and the distance marker with one stripe.
- The sign warns of a level crossing indicated by skilt 134 «Planovergang med bom» or skilt 135 «Planovergang uten bom».
- You must stop before the level crossing when a light or audible signal warns of a train, the barrier is lowering, or conditions otherwise make it unsafe to cross.
- Trains have priority, and you must never enter the level crossing unless you can get completely across without stopping.
- It is prohibited to overtake another vehicle immediately before or on a level crossing.
Tips
- Use the number of stripes as a countdown: Two stripes mean that one more distance marker remains before the level crossing.
- Release the accelerator and consider whether your speed is low enough to stop in a controlled manner if the signal is activated.
- Look both ways for trains, especially at a level crossing without a barrier or when visibility is limited.
- Keep a good distance from the vehicle in front so that you do not end up stopped on the tracks if traffic comes to a standstill.
Common misconceptions
- Some people think that the two diagonal stripes warn of dangerous bends. Instead, the stripes are part of the countdown to a level crossing.
- Some people think that the sign means the level crossing always has a barrier. It can warn of both a level crossing with a barrier and a level crossing without a barrier.
- Some people interpret the two stripes as a fixed distance in metres. The sign shows the marker's position in a series, not a specific number of metres in itself.
Test yourself
Easy
What does this sign warn about?
- AThat you are approaching several dangerous bends, and the first bend is to the right
- BThat you are approaching a railway level crossing, and this is the middle sign in a series
- CThat you are approaching a steep downhill gradient and should reduce your speed early
- DThat you are approaching a narrowing, and the road becomes narrower from both sides
Medium
You pass the sign and see that the barrier at the railway level crossing begins to lower. What must you do?
- AContinue across the railway level crossing if you can reach it before the barrier is fully down
- BPass the vehicle in front to get across before the train passes
- CStop before the railway level crossing and wait until it is safe to pass again
- DStop at the railway level crossing only if an audible signal also warns of a train
Hard
The railway level crossing ahead has no barrier, and the signals do not warn of a train. There is a queue on the other side, so you cannot get completely across. What must you do?
- AFollow the vehicle in front and stop on the track if the queue comes to a halt
- BPass the queue just before the railway level crossing to get across faster
- CDrive onto the railway level crossing because the signals do not warn that a train is coming
- DStop before the railway level crossing until you can drive completely across without stopping
Theory test tip
In the theory test, the sign can be confused with a warning sign for a bend because of the diagonal lines. Look for the narrow, rectangular shape and count the stripes: Two stripes mean the middle distance marker before a level crossing.
Did you know
The three distance markers serve as a visual countdown to the level crossing: three, two and one diagonal stripe. Skilt 136.2 is the middle sign in this series.
Frequently asked questions
What does distance marker 136.2 warn of?
It warns that you are approaching a level crossing indicated by skilt 134 or 135. It is the middle of three distance markers.
Why does the sign have two diagonal stripes?
The stripes show its position in the countdown to the level crossing. Three stripes come first, followed by two, and finally one stripe closest to the crossing.
Does the sign mean that I must stop immediately?
No, the sign itself does not require you to stop. Nevertheless, you must reduce your speed when necessary and be ready to stop if a signal, barrier, train or traffic conditions require it.
Can I cross if the barrier is not fully down?
No, not if the barrier is lowering or the signals warn of a train. You must stop at a safe distance before the level crossing and wait until the warning has ended and it is clear.
