Multiple-track
The sign warns of a multiple-track railway.
When you see the sign
Slow down and be prepared to stop before the level crossing. Check both directions and make sure that all tracks are clear and that you can drive all the way across without stopping on the tracks.
Rules
- The sign warns that a railway or tramway crosses the road at the same level and that the crossing includes two or more tracks.
- You must give way to approaching trains and trams at the level crossing.
- You must stop when a light signal, audible signal or barrier indicates that the level crossing cannot be crossed.
- You must not enter the level crossing if a queue or another obstruction could cause you to stop on the tracks.
- After one train has passed, you must check whether another train is approaching on a different track before proceeding.
Tips
- Look along all the tracks in both directions, including after the first train has passed.
- Choose a low enough speed to cross all the tracks continuously and under control.
- Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front so that you do not stop on the level crossing.
- Wait until the barrier is fully raised and the signals have stopped before proceeding.
Common misconceptions
- Some people think the sign means that the road is gaining more lanes, but it indicates multiple railway or tramway tracks.
- Many start driving as soon as one train has passed and overlook the possibility of another train approaching on a different track.
- Some people think the sign always requires a complete stop, but you must stop when the situation or the signals require it.
Test yourself
Easy
What does this sign warn about?
- AA stretch of road with several dangerous bends
- BA road that becomes narrower on both sides
- CA road that expands into two or more lanes
- DA level crossing with two or more railway or tram tracks
Medium
There is a queue on the other side of the level crossing, and you risk being left standing on the tracks. What do you do?
- AI drive onto the level crossing and stop close to the car in front.
- BI stop before the level crossing until there is space on the other side.
- CI follow the car in front as long as the barrier remains up.
- DI cross the level crossing if I cannot see any train.
Hard
One train has passed, the barrier is up, and the signals do not indicate that you must stop. What must you do before driving across?
- AI drive immediately because the first train has passed.
- BI always wait until another road user has driven across first.
- CI check whether another train is approaching on a different track.
- DI always come to a complete stop for at least one minute before the tracks.
Theory test tip
A common trap on the theory test is to interpret the sign as indicating multiple lanes. Its correct meaning is a level crossing with two or more railway or tramway tracks, and you must be particularly alert for trains approaching from either direction after the first train has passed.
Did you know
The multi-track version of Andreaskorset is designed differently from the sign for a single-track crossing. This difference is intended to remind drivers that multiple tracks must be checked before crossing the entire level crossing.
Frequently asked questions
Must I always stop at this sign?
No, the sign alone does not always require a complete stop. However, you must slow down and stop if signals, the barrier, a train or traffic conditions make it necessary.
Can I drive when the barrier starts to rise?
You must wait until the barrier is fully raised and the signals no longer prohibit crossing. Also check that all the tracks are clear before proceeding.
What should I do after a train has passed?
Wait and check whether another train is approaching on a different track. Do not proceed until the signals permit it and the entire crossing is clear.
Can I enter if the car in front is almost across the tracks?
Only if there is enough space on the other side for you to cross all the tracks without stopping. You must never stop on the level crossing.
