Roundabout (Rundkjøring)
The sign warns of a rundkjøring.
When you see the sign
Reduce your speed if necessary and prepare for the road to lead into a roundabout. Look for give-way signs, road markings, pedestrians and traffic already in the roundabout.
Rules
- The sign warns of a roundabout ahead, but does not by itself impose a give-way requirement.
- If the entrance is marked with «Vikeplikt», you must give way to traffic in the roundabout that you would otherwise obstruct or disrupt.
- You must drive counter-clockwise around the central island.
- You must signal clearly to the right before exiting the roundabout.
- When changing lanes inside the roundabout, you must give way to traffic in the lane you intend to enter, and you must use your turn signal.
Tips
- Slow down early enough to get a clear view of the entrance, the signs and the traffic in the roundabout.
- Choose your lane before entering when signs or road markings show which lane is appropriate for your exit.
- If you are taking the first exit, you should normally signal right before entering.
- Look out for cyclists and pedestrians at the exit, and do not let your turn signal replace checking your mirrors and blind spot.
Common misconceptions
- Believing that the warning sign alone means you must give way. The give-way requirement follows from separate give-way signs, road markings or the general give-way rules.
- Believing that everyone in a roundabout always has priority, regardless of signs and lane position. When changing lanes, you must give way to traffic in the lane you intend to enter.
- Failing to signal when exiting because the road is perceived as one continuous bend.
Test yourself
Easy
What does this sign warn about?
- AA dangerous bend ahead
- BA rundkjøring (roundabout) ahead
- CA narrower road ahead
- DSeveral dangerous bends ahead
Medium
You are taking the second exit and are approaching the exit. What should you do?
- AGive a clear signal to the left before exiting.
- BGive a clear signal to the right before exiting.
- CDo not signal because the road continues to curve.
- DSwitch on the hazard warning lights before exiting.
Hard
At the entrance, there is only this sign, without a vikeplikt sign or give-way line. Which assessment is correct?
- AThe sign imposes vikeplikt (a duty to give way) to all traffic travelling around the roundabout.
- BThe sign does not impose vikeplikt; other give-way rules must be considered.
- CThe sign requires you to stop before you can enter.
- DThe sign gives you priority over all traffic travelling around the roundabout.
Theory test tip
A common trap is to answer that the sign means «vikeplikt for traffic in the roundabout». The correct answer is that sign 126 only warns of a roundabout; look for a separate give-way sign at the entrance.
Did you know
Like other warning signs, this sign is normally placed some distance before the location it warns of. If the distance differs from the normal placement, it may be stated on a supplementary plate.
Frequently asked questions
Does this sign automatically mean I must give way at the entrance?
No, the warning sign only warns of a roundabout. The give-way requirement is usually indicated by sign 202 «Vikeplikt» and often a give-way line on the carriageway.
Do I have to use my turn signal when exiting?
Yes, you must signal right in good time before the exit. The signal should be clear, but not given so early that others could misunderstand which exit you intend to take.
Who must give way when changing lanes inside the roundabout?
The driver changing lanes must give way to traffic in the lane they are moving into. Check your mirrors and blind spot, and use your turn signal before changing lanes.
Can I always choose which lane to enter?
You must follow the signs and road markings regulating lane use. When lanes are not specifically regulated, you should choose a lane based on your exit and position yourself so that you avoid unnecessary lane changes.
