Tunnel (Tunnel) (122)

Tunnel (Tunnel)

Warning Signs Sign number: 122

The sign warns of a tunnel.

When you see the sign

Adjust your speed before the tunnel entrance, and be prepared for reduced visibility and the rapid transition between daylight and darkness. Check that your dipped headlights and rear lights are on, and keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front. Follow the speed limit, lane signals and other signs in the tunnel.

Rules

  • The sign warns of a tunnel ahead, but does not itself impose any requirement or prohibition.
  • The sign does not automatically change the speed limit; the current or separately posted speed limit applies.
  • You must use the required lights while driving and must avoid dazzling others with high beams.
  • Stopping or parking in a tunnel is prohibited unless the stop is caused by traffic conditions or is necessary to avoid danger.

Tips

  • Remove your sunglasses before entering, so your eyes can adjust to the darkness more quickly.
  • Switch on the dipped headlights manually if you are unsure whether your car's automatic lighting also turns on the rear lights.
  • Reduce your speed before the tunnel entrance instead of braking hard just after entering.
  • Watch for lane signals, emergency exits and the distance to the vehicle in front.

Common misconceptions

  • !Some people confuse the symbol with the sign for a narrower road, but this sign shows a tunnel entrance.
  • !The sign does not mean that the speed limit automatically becomes lower.
  • !An emergency lay-by in a tunnel is not an ordinary rest area or a place to make phone calls.
