Toilet
The sign indicates that a toilet is available at or near the road.
When you see the sign
The sign indicates that there is a toilet at or near the road. If you want to use the facility, follow any arrow or distance indication and turn off safely. The sign does not require you to stop.
Rules
- Skilt 612 indicates that there is a toilet at or near the road.
- The sign is a service sign and provides information; it does not require you to stop or turn off the road.
- Any arrow or distance indication shows which direction to follow or how far it is to the toilet.
- The sign does not in itself give you permission to stop or park; other signs and the usual rules on stopping and parking apply.
- The sign alone does not indicate whether the toilet is free of charge, open 24 hours a day or universally designed.
Tips
- Look for an arrow, distance indication or entrance to a rest area as you approach the facility.
- Signal well in advance and reduce your speed in a controlled manner before turning off the road.
- Continue driving if you notice the exit too late; do not brake suddenly or reverse.
- Park only in marked or clearly permitted spaces at the toilet facility.
Common misconceptions
- Some people think the sign means that the driver must stop, but it only provides information about a service facility.
- Some assume that they can stop in the carriageway by the sign, even though the sign does not give any such permission.
- The sign can be confused with other service signs, but the symbols for an emergency telephone, fuel and a repair shop indicate entirely different services.

Medium
You see the sign with an arrow pointing toward a side road, but you do not need the facility. What should you do?
- AStop before the side road to check whether the facility is open 24 hours a day.
- BTurn into the side road because the arrow requires you to follow it.
- CDrive into the side road because service signs always indicate a mandatory direction of travel.
- DContinue along your planned route if you do not want to use the facility.
Hard
You need to use the facility, but the sign is along a stretch where another sign prohibits stopping. What is correct?
- AFollow the direction to the facility and only stop where stopping is permitted.
- BStop in the carriageway with the hazard warning lights on because the facility is nearby.
- CStop by the sign because the service sign cancels the prohibition against stopping.
- DPark briefly by the sign because the need makes the stop legal.
Theory test tip
In the theory test, the trap may be that an answer option gives the sign an obligation or permission that it does not have. Its correct meaning is simply that there is a toilet at or near the road.
Did you know
The toilet symbol is designed so that the information can be easily understood without text, including by foreign road users. The sign is used, among other places, at rest areas and other service facilities along Norwegian roads.
Frequently asked questions
