Distance
The supplementary plate indicates the distance to the location where the main sign begins to apply, or to the location where a corresponding main sign is installed (advance warning).
When you see the sign
Read the distance on the supplementary plate and understand that the main sign applies from a point farther ahead, not necessarily where you are now. Adjust your driving so that you are prepared for the regulation or hazard once you have driven the stated distance.
Rules
- The supplementary plate indicates the distance to the point from which the main sign begins to apply.
- It may also indicate the distance to a point where a corresponding main sign has been installed.
- The distance must always be interpreted together with the main sign above the supplementary plate.
- The supplementary plate does not indicate how long the main sign applies for.
Tips
- Look at the main sign first, then read the distance on the supplementary plate.
- Use the distance to reduce your speed or position the vehicle correctly in good time if conditions require it.
- Remember that 1000 metres is approximately one kilometre, but assess the distance in relation to your speed and the road conditions.
- Look for a new or corresponding main sign as you approach the indicated point.
Common misconceptions
- Many people think that the number shows how long the main sign applies for, but it shows how far ahead the point is where the sign applies or is repeated.
- Some people start following an indicated regulation immediately, even though the supplementary plate shows that it begins farther ahead.
- The sign is often confused with «Utstrekning», which indicates the beginning and end of a specific road section.

Easy
What does the supplementary plate in the picture mean?
- AIt indicates the length of the section of road where the main sign applies.
- BIt indicates the vehicle group to which the main sign applies.
- CIt indicates the time of day during which the main sign applies.
- DIt indicates the distance to the place where the main sign begins to apply or is repeated.
Medium
You are driving at 80 km/t and see a sign with a speed limit of 60 km/t above this supplementary plate. What do you do?
- AI adjust my speed so that it is no more than 60 km/t when I reach the point 100 metres ahead.
- BI immediately reduce my speed to no more than 60 km/t and maintain it for 100 metres.
- CI continue at 80 km/t through the next 100 metres and beyond.
- DI immediately reduce my speed to no more than 60 km/t and maintain it until the next intersection.
Hard
What is the correct difference between this supplementary plate and a supplementary plate showing «100–300 m» below the same main sign?
- AThis one refers to a place 100 metres ahead, while the other shows a section from 100 to 300 metres ahead.
- BThis one shows a section 100 metres long, while the other refers to a place between 100 and 300 metres ahead.
- CThis one shows a driving time, while the other shows a time of day.
- DThis one shows a limit for passenger cars, while the other shows a limit for vehicles with trailers.
Theory test tip
Look carefully at whether the number indicates a single distance to a point ahead, or whether the supplementary plate shows the beginning and end of a road section. A single distance below the main sign normally means the distance ahead, while «Utstrekning» describes where a regulated section begins and ends.
Did you know
The supplementary plate is often used for advance warning, giving the driver time to prepare before a regulation, hazard or corresponding main sign farther ahead.
Frequently asked questions
Does the main sign apply as soon as I pass the sign combination?
The supplementary plate informs you that the point from which the main sign applies is the stated distance ahead. You must still use the distance to prepare in good time.
What does it mean if the supplementary plate says «100 m»?
It means that the point where the main sign begins to apply, or where a corresponding main sign has been installed, is 100 metres ahead. The meaning must be read together with the main sign.
Does the number show how long the main sign applies for?
No. The extent of a specific road section is indicated by supplementary plate 804 «Utstrekning», not by this supplementary plate.
Can the supplementary plate be used on its own?
A supplementary plate is designed to supplement a main sign and must be interpreted together with it. The number alone does not indicate which regulation or situation the distance refers to.
