Extent (804)

Extent

Supplementary Plates Sign number: 804

The supplementary plate indicates that the main sign applies to a specified stretch of road. The numbers indicate the distance to the beginning and end of the stretch of road.

When you see the sign

Read the supplementary plate together with the main sign, and note both distances. Follow the instruction, prohibition or information given by the main sign from the distance marking the beginning of the road section until the distance marking its end.

Rules

  • The supplementary plate cannot be interpreted on its own; it indicates the extent of the main sign above it.
  • The first number indicates the distance from the sign to the beginning of the road section where the main sign applies.
  • The second number indicates the distance from the sign to the end of the road section where the main sign applies.
  • If the first distance is 0, the main sign applies from the sign onwards up to the stated end distance.

Tips

  • Look for two distances or an interval, and relate them to the beginning and end of the section respectively.
  • Start adjusting your driving before you reach the first stated distance.
  • Keep track roughly of how far you have driven so that you know when the stated section ends.

Common misconceptions

  • !Thinking that both numbers indicate the length of the road section. They indicate the distances to the beginning and end respectively, measured from the sign.
  • !Confusing the supplementary plate with skilt 802 Avstand, which normally gives the distance to the point where the main sign starts to apply or to a corresponding main sign.
  • !Thinking that the main sign always applies immediately. If the first distance is greater than 0, it does not take effect until further ahead.

What does the supplementary plate indicate?

  • AIt indicates the distance to the beginning and end of the section of road where the main sign applies.
  • BIt indicates the periods during which the main sign applies on the relevant section of road.
  • CIt indicates only the distance to the place where the main sign begins to apply.
  • DIt indicates which vehicles the main sign applies to on the relevant section of road.

Medium

You encounter the main sign «Parkering forbudt» with the supplementary plate shown in the picture. You want to park 500 metres after the sign. What do you do?

  • AYou continue driving because the parking prohibition applies at the place where you want to park.
  • BYou park there because the parking prohibition applies only exactly at the sign location.
  • CYou park there because the supplementary plate only shows the distance to the next main sign.
  • DYou park there because the parking prohibition begins only where the section ends.

Hard

The supplementary plate in the picture shows two numbers. On another road, there is only one number below a corresponding main sign. What is the correct difference?

  • ATwo numbers indicate the distance to the beginning and end of the section, while one number normally indicates the distance to the place where the main sign begins to apply.
  • BTwo numbers indicate the distance to two corresponding main signs, while one number normally indicates the distance to the nearest main sign.
  • CTwo numbers indicate two alternative lengths of the section, while one number normally indicates the total length of the entire section.
  • DTwo numbers indicate that the main sign applies immediately, while one number normally indicates that its effect ends after the stated distance.

Theory test tip

In the theory test, the trap may be the difference between one distance figure and two boundary distances: One figure usually shows the distance to a location, whereas the figures here show the distances to both the beginning and the end of a road section.

Did you know

The supplementary plate makes it possible to indicate both where a regulated road section begins and where it ends, without using two separate distance plates.

Frequently asked questions

What does an interval such as 0.2–1.3 km mean?

The main sign starts to apply 0.2 km, or 200 metres, after the sign. It ceases to apply 1.3 km after the sign.

Does the main sign apply between the two stated distances?

Yes. The first distance marks the beginning of the relevant road section, and the second marks its end.

What is the difference from supplementary plate 802 Avstand?

Skilt 802 indicates the distance to the point where the main sign starts to apply, or to a location where a corresponding main sign is placed. Skilt 804 indicates both the beginning and the end of a specific road section.

Can the supplementary plate be understood without the main sign?

No. It only has meaning together with the main sign and indicates where on the road that main sign applies.
