Combination vehicle
The supplementary plate indicates combination vehicles.
When you see the sign
Read the supplementary plate together with the main sign above it. If you are driving a motor vehicle with a trailer, the main sign’s requirement, prohibition or information applies to your vehicle combination; if you are driving without a trailer, you are normally not covered by this restriction.
Rules
- Sign 807.4 is a supplementary plate and has meaning through the main sign beneath which it is placed.
- The supplementary plate indicates that the main sign applies to vehicle combinations, meaning a motor vehicle with one or more vehicles attached.
- A passenger car with a trailer is considered a vehicle combination and is therefore covered by the supplementary plate.
- The supplementary plate indicates which vehicle group the main sign applies to; it does not indicate distance, extent or time period.
Tips
- Always look at the main sign first, and then use the supplementary plate to determine whether the rule applies to your vehicle combination.
- Remember that even an ordinary passenger car with a small trailer is a vehicle combination.
- Do not confuse the symbol with the supplementary plate for trucks and tractor units; here, the attached trailer is the decisive factor.
- When driving with a trailer, pay extra attention to such supplementary plates where restrictions apply to specific roads, lanes or areas.
Common misconceptions
- Thinking that the sign only applies to large trucks with semi-trailers. It also applies to passenger cars with trailers.
- Interpreting the supplementary plate as a standalone prohibition against vehicle combinations. The specific rule is determined by the main sign above it.
- Thinking that a tractor unit without an attached trailer is always a vehicle combination. Another vehicle must be attached.

Theory test tip
A typical trap is a picture of a main sign with this supplementary plate and a question about whether the rule applies to a passenger car with a trailer. The answer is normally yes, because the vehicle combination is a vehicle combination.
Did you know
In the regulations, «vehicle combination» is a broader term than many people use in everyday speech. An ordinary passenger car towing a small trailer is also a vehicle combination.
Frequently asked questions
Does the supplementary plate apply to passenger cars with trailers?
Yes. When a passenger car is towing a trailer, the vehicles form a vehicle combination, so the main sign applies to the combination.
Does the supplementary plate apply to passenger cars without trailers?
Normally no, because the car on its own is not a vehicle combination. Other signs or rules at the location may nevertheless apply to the car.
Is the supplementary plate a standalone prohibition sign?
No. It limits the meaning of the main sign to vehicle combinations, while the main sign shows the actual requirement, prohibition or information.
What is the difference between this supplementary plate and supplementary plate 807.2?
This supplementary plate applies to a motor vehicle with an attached vehicle. Supplementary plate 807.2 indicates vans, trucks and tractor units and does not in itself require a trailer to be attached.
