Guidance line
The guidance line indicates the routing of lanes or turning movements through an intersection.
When you see the sign
Follow the white ledelinje through the intersection so that you maintain the correct path or turning movement. Adjust your position to the line, while also following signs, traffic signals, priority rules and other traffic.
Rules
- The ledelinje shows how lanes or turning movements are guided through an intersection.
- The ledelinje does not, in itself, give you priority or exempt you from yielding.
- You should use the line as a guide to stay on the correct path and avoid cutting into another lane.
- The ledelinje is not a sperrelinje and therefore does not generally prohibit crossing the marking.
Tips
- Choose the correct lane before the intersection, and look for the ledelinje that continues from your lane.
- When turning left, follow the curve of the line and avoid cutting across the turn into oncoming or parallel lanes.
- Look well through the intersection towards the lane you will enter, rather than fixing your gaze directly in front of the car.
- Be aware of vehicles beside you when several turning lanes are guided in parallel through the intersection.
Common misconceptions
- Thinking that the ledelinje is an ordinary lane line that primarily divides lanes along a continuous road.
- Confusing the ledelinje with a sperrelinje and believing that it can never be crossed.
- Assuming that following the ledelinje gives you priority over other road users in the intersection.
Theory test tip
In the theory test, the trap may be to choose that the ledelinje prohibits crossing. Remember that its main function is to show how lanes or turning movements are guided through an intersection, not to function as a sperrelinje.
Did you know
Ledelinjer are used particularly in large or difficult-to-see intersections, often where several lanes turn at the same time, to show which lane each path should lead into.
Frequently asked questions
What is the main purpose of a ledelinje?
It shows how a lane or turning movement continues through an intersection. It helps the driver enter the correct lane on the other side.
Can I cross a ledelinje?
The ledelinje does not carry the same prohibition on crossing as a sperrelinje. Any crossing must nevertheless be carried out safely and without endangering or unnecessarily obstructing others.
Does the ledelinje give me priority through the intersection?
No. Yield rules, traffic lights, traffic signs and the traffic regulations apply regardless of the ledelinje.
What is the difference between a ledelinje and a lane line?
A ledelinje shows how the lane or turning movement is guided through an intersection. A lane line is used to separate lanes and may be crossed when this is done in accordance with the traffic regulations.
