Rail vehicle (1044)

Rail vehicle

Road Markings Sign number: 1044

When you see the sign

The road marking indicates that the lane is reserved for rail vehicles, normally trams. Do not continue in the lane by car, and check carefully for approaching trams before you cross the tracks where other road markings permit this.

Rules

  • The symbol indicates that the lane is reserved for rail vehicles.
  • Car drivers must not use the reserved lane as a normal traffic lane.
  • You must give way to the tram and, if necessary, stop to allow it to pass.
  • You may cross the lane only when this is not prohibited by a solid line, sign or other regulation, and when you can do so without obstructing a rail vehicle.
  • At traffic lights, signs or signals, you must follow the regulation that applies to your lane; tram-specific signals do not apply to car drivers.

Tips

  • Look well ahead for the symbol on the road, tracks and any tram signals.
  • Check your mirrors and blind spot before crossing a tram lane, as a tram may be approaching from behind.
  • Do not stop on the tracks in a queue; wait before the tracks until there is enough space on the other side.
  • Remember that trams have a long braking distance and cannot swerve out of the way.

Common misconceptions

  • !Assuming that the symbol merely warns of tram tracks. It indicates that the lane is reserved for rail vehicles.
  • !Using the lane as a normal traffic lane because it is empty or because you are about to turn.
  • !Looking for trams only ahead and forgetting that one may quickly approach from behind alongside your car.

Theory test tip

In the theory test, the trap may be interpreting the symbol as a general warning symbol. Its correct main meaning is that the lane is reserved for rail vehicles, not merely that there are tracks in the road.

Did you know

The marking is used particularly in urban areas with trams, including Oslo, and makes it possible to show directly on the road which lane is reserved for rail vehicles.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive in the lane when no tram is coming?

No, not as a normal traffic lane. The lane is reserved for rail vehicles even when it is temporarily empty.

Can I cross a lane marked with Skinnekjøretøy to turn?

This may be permitted if signs, signals and road markings do not prohibit it. You must check that no tram is approaching, and you must cross without obstructing the rail vehicle.

Does the tram always have right of way?

You have a particular duty to give way to the tram, but saying that it "always has right of way" is too absolute. Traffic lights, signs and other specific regulations at the location must also be followed.

Do the tram's own light signals also apply to my car?

No, dedicated signals for public transport or trams do not automatically apply to car drivers. Follow the signal and road marking that apply to your lane.
