When you see the sign
Read the road marking early and assess it together with traffic signs, signals and other road markings. Adapt your road position and driving to the message, for example by avoiding a lane marked «BUSS» if you are not permitted to use the bus lane.
Rules
- Sign 1050.1 consists of text marked directly on the carriageway to provide information or clarify a regulation.
- The text must be interpreted according to its wording and context; the sign therefore does not have one fixed meaning that applies to all texts.
- When the text supplements a traffic sign, you must follow the regulation indicated by the sign, for example the entry rules for a lane marked «BUSS».
- Text road markings must be considered together with lane lines, arrows and other road markings showing which lane the message applies to.
Tips
- Look well ahead so that you have time to read the entire text before your vehicle drives over it.
- Check the signs beside or above the road; they often provide the full regulation highlighted by the text.
- Pay particular attention before intersections, at bus stops and when choosing a lane, where text road markings are often used.
- Do not make a sudden lane change if you notice the text late; follow the road markings and choose a safe way forward.
Common misconceptions
- Assuming that sign 1050.1 always means «STOPP». It can contain several different words and must be interpreted according to the text actually marked on the road.
- Ignoring the text because it is worn or partly obscured, even though the associated sign still regulates traffic.
- Confusing text road markings with lane lines; the text conveys a message, while the lines, among other things, define lanes and may restrict crossing.

Easy
What does this type of road marking indicate?
- AIt always warns of insufficient visibility for ordinary overtaking.
- BIt conveys information or clarifies a regulation based on the wording and the context.
- CIt separates lanes and can always be crossed when traffic is light.
- DIt always prohibits driving on or across the marking.
Medium
You are driving an ordinary passenger car without permission to use a kollektivfelt (public transport lane). The lane ahead is marked «BUSS», and a sign indicates that it is a kollektivfelt. What do you do?
- AI choose another lane before driving into the kollektivfelt.
- BI drive into the kollektivfelt if the lane line is broken.
- CI drive into the kollektivfelt because the text is only guidance.
- DI stop in the kollektivfelt and wait for the text to no longer apply.
Hard
When the variant in the image is used at an intersection together with a stop sign, what is correct about the difference from a transverse stop line?
- AThe marking prohibits changing lanes, while the stop line separates lanes in the same direction.
- BThe marking reserves the lane for buses, while the stop line indicates where the stop must take place.
- CThe marking shows the stopping message, while the stop line indicates where the stop must take place.
- DThe marking indicates where the stop must take place, while the stop line merely warns of the intersection.
Theory test tip
In the theory test, the trap may be to assign sign 1050.1 one specific meaning without checking which word is marked. Always read the text and assess the associated signs, lane lines and traffic situation.
Did you know
Text on the carriageway is often used to repeat or clarify other signs, because the driver can perceive the message while looking ahead at the lane.
Frequently asked questions
Does all text on the carriageway have the same meaning?
No. The meaning depends on the word marked, as well as on the signs and other road markings at the location.
Can I drive in a lane marked «BUSS»?
Only if the rules for the bus lane permit your vehicle to use it. Look for signs showing which road users the lane is reserved for and whether the regulation applies at specific times.
Do I have to stop when «STOPP» is marked on the road?
Look for a stop sign and stop line, which indicate the specific stopping obligation and where you must stop. Text on the carriageway is normally used to warn of or clarify the regulation.
What should I do if the text is difficult to read?
If necessary, reduce your speed safely and look for traffic signs, signals and other road markings. Worn text road markings do not cancel a regulation that is still indicated by other valid signs.
