When you see the Zeichen

Expect a parked vehicle or trailer to protrude into the carriageway and create an obstacle, especially in the dark. Reduce your speed if necessary, keep a sufficient lateral distance and only pass if oncoming traffic and the available carriageway width make it safe to do so.

Rules

  • The parking warning board identifies a parked vehicle or trailer as a possible obstacle at the edge of the carriageway.
  • It does not impose any independent requirement or prohibition on passing traffic, nor does it regulate Vorfahrt or prescribe a particular direction of travel.
  • The normal rules apply when passing: keep a sufficient lateral distance, show consideration for oncoming traffic and wait if necessary.
  • The red-and-white retroreflective design improves visibility in headlight beams, but it does not emit light itself.

Tips

  • At night, pay particular attention to the vehicle’s outline well in advance, because the retroreflective board only highlights part of the obstacle.
  • Before moving out, check your mirrors, oncoming traffic and lateral distance; the board may indicate a wide or difficult-to-see vehicle.
  • Do not confuse the parking warning board with a barrier board: it generally marks a parked obstacle and does not automatically close off part of the road.

Common misunderstandings

  • !The parking warning board is mistakenly understood as a sign indicating a complete road closure.
  • !Learners mistake it for an active warning light; in fact, it is merely retroreflective.
  • !Some assume that the red-and-white stripes prescribe which side to pass on. Zeichen 630 alone contains no such instruction.

Exam tip

In exam questions, Zeichen 630 is often confused with a mobile barrier board. The key point is that the parking warning board identifies a parked vehicle as an obstacle, but by itself does not prohibit driving on a particular part of the road.

Did you know

The parking warning board officially belongs to the category of traffic facilities, even though it is typically attached directly to a parked vehicle or trailer rather than mounted on its own post like an ordinary traffic sign.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to stop at a parking warning board?

No, Zeichen 630 does not require you to Halt. However, you must wait if it is not possible to pass safely because of oncoming traffic or insufficient carriageway width.

Does the hatching indicate which side I have to pass on?

No, Zeichen 630 alone does not specify a mandatory side for passing. The decisive factors are the actual traffic situation, other traffic signs and the requirement to keep to the right.

Is the parking warning board the same as a mobile barrier board?

No. A mobile barrier board marks a closed-off section of road and directs traffic around it; the parking warning board, by contrast, warns of a parked vehicle or trailer.

Can the parking warning board flash or light up by itself at night?

No, it generally has a retroreflective surface and becomes visible when light shines onto it. It must therefore not be confused with yellow or red warning lights on barrier equipment.
