Course of forkjørsveg
The supplementary sign shows a schematic image of the junction, where a thick line indicates forkjørsveg and a thin line indicates a road where signs 202 “vikeplikt” or 204 “Stop” have been erected.
When you see the sign
Read the broad line as the route of the forkjørsveg through the junction, and the narrow line as a connecting road. Position yourself correctly, signal when the direction you are travelling requires it, and assess the give-way rules based on the main sign and the road layout shown.
Rules
- The broad line shows which road is the forkjørsveg through the junction.
- The narrow line shows a connecting road that is not part of the forkjørsveg.
- The supplementary plate must be read together with the main sign beneath which it is placed; it does not establish priority on its own.
- Traffic from the connecting roads must give way to traffic on the forkjørsveg when this follows from the signs.
- You must use your turn signals when turning or otherwise substantially changing the vehicle’s position, including when following a forkjørsveg that bends at the junction.
Tips
- Look at the line thickness early, not just at the direction in which the lines point.
- Reduce your speed enough to follow the route of the forkjørsveg and detect traffic from the narrow side roads.
- Do not assume that the road straight ahead is the forkjørsveg; the broad line may bend through the junction.
- Use your turn signals clearly when following the forkjørsveg around a bend, so that other road users understand where you are going.
Common misconceptions
- Thinking that the straight line always indicates the forkjørsveg. It is the thickness, not the direction, that determines this.
- Interpreting the lines as distance markers or lane markings instead of a diagram of the junction.
- Failing to signal because you are still following the forkjørsveg, even though you are in fact turning.
Test yourself
Easy
What does the wide line on the supplementary plate show?
- AIt shows how the forkjørsveg runs through the intersection.
- BIt shows which road goes straight ahead.
- CIt shows how far the main sign's regulation applies.
- DIt shows which lane you should choose.
Medium
You are going to follow the forkjørsveg, which is drawn with a wide line, through the intersection. What do you do?
- AI signal in the direction in which the wide line goes and follow the forkjørsveg.
- BI do not signal because the forkjørsveg always has priority at the intersection.
- CI follow the narrow line because it shows where the forkjørsveg continues.
- DI stop in the intersection and let all traffic from the narrow line proceed.
Hard
What can you establish if this supplementary plate is displayed alone without a main sign?
- AIt establishes priority along the wide line.
- BIt does not establish priority without a main sign.
- CIt indicates the distance to the next intersection.
- DIt indicates the extent of a priority section.
Theory test tip
A common trap on the theory test is to choose the road going straight ahead as the forkjørsveg. Always follow the broad line, even when it bends, and remember that the supplementary plate must be interpreted together with the main sign.
Did you know
The sign is used particularly at junctions where the forkjørsveg bends, because the road’s priority route could otherwise easily be mistaken for the road straight ahead.
Frequently asked questions
What does the broad line mean?
The broad line shows how the forkjørsveg continues through the junction. It may continue straight ahead or bend.
What does the narrow line mean?
The narrow line shows a connecting road that is not part of the forkjørsveg. The traffic’s obligation to give way is determined by the main sign and any other signs.
Do I have to signal when following the forkjørsveg around the bend?
Yes. If you are turning, you must signal even if you are still following the forkjørsveg. Priority does not exempt you from showing where you are going.
Does the supplementary plate alone give priority?
No. It explains the route of the forkjørsveg and must be read together with the main sign beneath which it is placed.
