Positioning of parked vehicle
When you see the sign
Read the supplementary plate together with the main sign, and park the vehicle in the position shown in the illustration, for example parallel to, at an angle to, or perpendicular to the direction of travel. Keep the entire vehicle within the regulated parking area or marked parking space.
Rules
- Sign 829 is a supplementary plate and must be interpreted together with the main sign above it.
- The illustration shows how the parked vehicle must be positioned in relation to the road or parking area.
- The vehicle must be parked in the direction and at the angle shown, even when another position seems easier.
- The supplementary plate does not by itself grant the right to park; any other conditions on the main sign, other supplementary plates and road markings must also be followed.
- The required positioning does not exempt the driver from the duty to avoid danger or unnecessary obstruction for other road users.
Tips
- Look closely at whether the vehicles in the illustration are shown parallel to, at an angle to, or perpendicular to the road.
- Compare the illustration with the kerb, edge of the road and marked parking spaces before reversing or driving into the space.
- After parking, check that the entire car is positioned in accordance with both the illustration and any road markings.
- Read all the supplementary plates on the same signpost, since time restrictions, vehicle categories or other conditions may impose further limits on parking.
Common misconceptions
- Some people think that the supplementary plate shows the distance to the parking space, but distance is indicated by supplementary plate 802.
- Some interpret the illustration as a suggestion, even though it shows how the vehicle must be positioned.
- Some focus only on the positioning and overlook time restrictions or other conditions on the rest of the signpost.
Test yourself
Easy
What does this supplementary plate indicate?
- AWhich vehicles may park
- BHow parked vehicles must be positioned
- CHow long the parking stretch is
- DHow far it is to the parking area
Medium
You are going to park in an area where both the road marking and this supplementary plate apply. Another position seems easier. What must you do?
- APark in the direction and at the angle shown by the illustration
- BPark in the direction that makes exiting easiest
- CPark in any direction as long as the vehicle is within the area
- DPark parallel to the road regardless of what the illustration shows
Hard
This supplementary plate is displayed together with a main sign and another supplementary plate indicating times. How should the sign assembly be understood?
- AThe arrangement grants permission to park regardless of the time conditions.
- BThe arrangement indicates the length of the stretch where the time conditions apply.
- CThe arrangement indicates the distance to the area where the time conditions apply.
- DThe arrangement and the time conditions must be assessed together with the main sign.
Theory test tip
In the theory test, the trap may be confusing the illustration with a supplementary plate indicating distance or extent. Look for the vehicle symbols and how they are positioned in relation to the edge of the road; this shows the parking position, not how far the main sign applies.
Did you know
The sign uses a simple overhead illustration to show how to park without using text. This means the same type of supplementary plate can be used both for on-street parking and in specially designated parking areas.
Frequently asked questions
Can I choose a different parking angle if the car still fits?
No, the vehicle must be positioned as shown in the illustration. A different angle may violate the signs even if the car does not cross a marked line.
Does the supplementary plate apply without a main sign?
The supplementary plate is intended to supplement a main sign and must be read together with it. It indicates how to position the vehicle, but does not by itself create a right to park.
Must I also follow marked parking spaces?
Yes, you must follow both the sign and any relevant road markings. Park so that the entire car is within the space and positioned as shown in the illustration.
Does the sign indicate how long I can park?
No, this supplementary plate only indicates how the vehicle must be positioned. The time period or maximum parking duration must be stated on other signs or supplementary plates.
