Parking disc/free ticket
The supplementary plate indicates that parking is permitted at the location only when either a device indicating the time when the vehicle is parked or a ticket from a parking meter indicating when the free parking expires is placed clearly visible behind the vehicle’s windscreen.
When you see the sign
You may only park if you use a parking disc or collect a free ticket, as required by the system in place. Set the disc to the time the vehicle was parked, or place the free ticket showing the expiry time clearly behind the windscreen. Also check the main sign and any time indications to determine the permitted parking duration.
Rules
- Skilt 831 is a supplementary sign and must be read together with the main sign beneath which it is placed.
- Parking is only permitted when a parking disc or a free ticket from a parking meter is used in accordance with the system in place.
- The parking disc must show the time at which the vehicle was parked.
- A free ticket must show when the free parking period expires.
- The disc or ticket must be clearly visible behind the windscreen so that it can be checked from outside.
Tips
- Read the information at the parking meter or on the signs before leaving the car, as the permitted parking duration may vary.
- Check from outside that the time is easy to read and that the ticket is not upside down or hidden.
- Set the disc as soon as you park, or collect the free ticket before leaving the vehicle.
- Make a note of the expiry time or set a reminder so that the car is moved before the free period ends.
Common misconceptions
- Assuming that parking is freely permitted without registration because the ticket costs nothing.
- Setting the parking disc to a later time than the actual parking time in order to extend the parking period.
- Overlooking the main sign or a supplementary sign showing times and assuming that Skilt 831 alone indicates how long you may park.

Theory test tip
In the theory test, the trap may be confusing the sign with the supplementary sign «Tid». Skilt 831 does not itself specify particular times, but requires a clearly visible parking disc or free ticket.
Did you know
Skilt 831 covers two different control systems: a parking disc shows when parking started, while a free ticket from a meter shows when the free parking period expires.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to collect a ticket even if parking is free?
Yes, if the system in place requires a free ticket. The ticket must show when the free parking period expires and be placed clearly visibly behind the windscreen.
What time should the parking disc show?
It must show the time at which the vehicle was parked. You cannot set it forward to obtain a longer parking period.
Does the supplementary sign indicate how long I can park?
The sign indicates the requirement to use a parking disc or free ticket, and it also states the maximum permitted parking duration, «Maks 2 timer». If no time is shown on the supplementary sign, the duration must be determined from the other signs or the parking meter.
