Particular accident hazard
The supplementary sign shows which type of accident is common on the section: running off the road on a bend.
When you see the sign
Read the supplementary plate together with the main sign above it: It warns that running off the road on a bend is an especially common type of accident on the stretch of road ahead. Reduce your speed before the bend, choose the correct position in your lane and be prepared for the bend to be sharper or have less grip than expected.
Rules
- The sign must be interpreted together with the main sign it is placed below and specifies that the particular accident risk concerns running off the road on a bend.
- The supplementary plate does not by itself introduce a specific speed limit; the driver must nevertheless adapt their speed to the bend, visibility, road conditions and other traffic conditions.
- The speed must be low enough for the driver to remain in control and stop within the distance they can see, and in front of any foreseeable obstacle.
- A posted speed limit is an upper limit, not a recommended speed for driving through the bend.
Tips
- Brake before entering the bend to avoid heavy braking while in the bend.
- Look well through the bend and stay in your own lane without cutting across the centre line.
- Take extra care in rain, snow, ice, gravel or wet leaves, as side grip may then be significantly reduced.
- Avoid sudden steering, hard acceleration and heavy braking while the vehicle is in the bend.
Common misconceptions
- Thinking that the supplementary plate shows the distance to a dangerous bend. Distance is indicated by supplementary plate 802.
- Thinking that the sign sets a new speed limit. It describes the type of accident, while the speed must be adapted to the conditions.
- Looking at the symbol in isolation and overlooking the main sign above it, even though the supplementary plate must be read in conjunction with that sign.
Test yourself
Easy
What does the supplementary plate tell you?
- AThe main sign begins to apply at the next bend.
- BThe particular accident hazard indicated by the main sign concerns running off the road in a bend.
- CThe main sign applies only to passenger cars on the section.
- DThe main sign applies only during a specific period.
Medium
You are approaching a blind and wet bend with this supplementary plate below the main sign. The speed limit is 80 km/t. What should you do?
- AI should maintain the same speed because the supplementary plate only applies to vehicles towing a trailer.
- BI should stop before the bend because the supplementary plate requires all drivers to make a complete stop.
- CI should drive at 80 km/t because the posted speed limit is recommended through the bend.
- DI should reduce my speed so that I have control and can stop within a visible stretch.
Hard
You want to know how far it is to the place where the main sign begins to apply. Which is correct?
- AThe supplementary plate indicates the distance to the beginning and end of the section.
- BThe supplementary plate indicates that the distance continues up to the first bend.
- CThe supplementary plate provides no distance information; distance must be indicated with supplementary plate 802.
- DThe supplementary plate indicates that the section begins at the sign and ends after the bend.
Theory test tip
A typical trap is confusing the sign with a distance or extent plate. The symbol describes the type of accident—running off the road on a bend; it gives neither a distance in metres, a time period nor a vehicle category.
Did you know
Sign 817.1 is one of the supplementary plates that specifies a particular accident risk by showing which type of accident is common on the stretch of road ahead. This gives the driver more precise information than a general hazard warning alone.
Frequently asked questions
Does the sign mean that there is one specific dangerous bend ahead?
Not necessarily. It tells you that running off the road on a bend is an especially common type of accident on the stretch of road indicated, and must be read together with the main sign.
Do I have to reduce my speed even if I am within the speed limit?
Yes, if the speed limit is too high for the bend, visibility or road conditions. Your speed must always be adapted so that you remain in control of the vehicle.
Does the supplementary plate indicate how far away the bend is?
No. The distance to the point where a main sign begins to apply is normally indicated by supplementary plate 802.
Does the sign apply only to passenger cars?
No, not without another specific indication. The symbol warns of the type of accident and is not the supplementary plate for passenger cars, which is sign number 807.1.
